So, anyone have suggestions as to what laptop i should get for college or where to look.
What would you suggest I avoid and what do you think will end up being pretty necessary?
Any bad laptop stories or brands or features that just suck?

Check with your school. (If you made a decision on one I missed it.) Several colleges don't support Macs any more. You can use them, you're just on your own. If you'd want any help from their support desk you'll need to make sure you get a system they say they can work on. :-)

DON'T get anything from Toshiba!!!!!!!!! EVER

Especially a tablet.

This is the compy I have... http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/pdet.to?seg=HHO&poid=356710&in_merch=1

I was required to get it for Engineering school here at Virginia Tech, and sure it's nifty, but its waaay more trouble than its worth. The screen heats up really easily, which is a big problem when you have to write on it.

The only thing that I like about it, is the size...it's really small, so it's easy to just pack it up in my bookbag and go somewhere, and it's lightweight...those are some good qualities in my opinion (after all the point of a laptop is to be portable).

I have a lot of friends that have macs and very happy with them, but it all depends on what you want. I'd check with the school to see if they have any suggestions, deals, or requirements.

Well speaking as an expert in the computer field. :p

I'd recommend you stay away from Windows Vista, I doubt whatever college you go to will require it and it's still a lot of headaches. I'd highly recommend Windows XP Professional not that Home Edition or Media Center crap.

I've had good luck with Dell's, they're bringing their support back to the US from India. HP still has most of their technical support in India. (Nothing against that, it simply is sometimes hard to understand what they're saying. Honest! I'm not being racist. lol)

Don't be afraid to shop the outlet stores, provided their from the company that made the laptop. Dell Outlet. On most things I don't recommend the extended warranty, but on computers I do. Not the accidental warranty which covers if you drop it and stuff, but the regular extended manufacturers warranty. (With Dell you can get a 3 year warranty for about $150.) My experience has been that sometime in that 3 year period you'll need something fixed.

Wireless...know that 802.11N has not become ( ... )
