Thanks for the review! That's pretty much what I've been suspecting, though I didn't know the antifeminist part of the story. Of course jukebox musicals rarely have a real story, but I still wish someone would put a bit more effort on it, even if it's "just" a feel-good musical. It doesn't have to automatically mean that the story sucks, I strongly believe that it's possible to write a funny musical with a story that makes some sense. :P
Have you got any idea of how well the musical is doing in Vienna? I'm curious to know if it's popular or not.
That's exactly my point. It doesn't have to be extremely serious but a little more effort would be nice. I think what really bothered me was the anti-feminist part...
It is really popular at the moment. As far as I know they already are about 90% sold out for the next few months after summer pause. So it's doing really well!
Patrick Schenk plays Costa? Rofl, I didn't know that.
I've only seen the Hamburg version so I'm kind of unsure about certain things (why does Florian walk around Triest, how did they even end up there??), but let's start from the beginning. ;)
a woman who cares about her career can't have a satisfying and fulfilled family/love life. Of course she just has to be lonely and alone.
Well I don't know if they changed anything in the script or if we're just seeing it differently, but I never pictured Lisa as "lonely". At least not in the beginning. She just never thought about it because she was too busy with her career and when she met Axel and got stuck with him on the boat, away from her everyday life, she finally had a bit time to realize that career isn't everything. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying she should have left her job and gone off to marry him, but she DIDN'T do it, did she? She just had a priority switch.
* I always thought she had to push the car because the car was too old and weird ~special~ so she wouldn't have

*** Well, the career <-> love life thing just bugged me. I think it's perfectly okay if she realizes that her career isn't everything but she goes from realizing that to almost behaving as if her career meant nothing to her any more. You're rigt she doesn't marry him (but they decide to move in togehter rather quickly in the end...) It's just that the whole show she goes on and on about how she has to hold this prize in her own hands and that she will never let anyone else accept in on her behalf and then she has the chance and doesn't take it? Because career isn't everything? I just don't get it...
*** Merci, chérie: I don't mean the scene when Axel sings it (that one I found quite funny cause they weren't taking themselves seriously). I meant the very short snippet of the song when the steward explains the different light themes in the wedding suite to Maria and Otto: romantic light, very romantic light, light for certain hours.
What did he do before? I don't know him... Well, I had him on as Robespierre in Marie Antoinette (he's on the video, if you've seen it). :)
They don't marry? Wait, what, lol. I'm pretty sure they had a double wedding, Maria/Otto and Lisa/Axel. Because she chooses Freiheitsstatue (where the old ones want to get married) over Preisstatue? And then somebody yells "Doppelhochzeit". I think. :S
romantic light, very romantic light, light for certain hours. Aaah, ok, lol. You're right, I kinda forgot about that one.
Haha, no, in the Hamburg version they have to get on the ship in _Hamburg_. I think there's even a "Did-you-know" in the programme which says the sealine Hamburg-Genua-New York was invented for the show and it doesn't exist in real life. Nowai. ;)
