A letter addressed "Resident" arrived in my mailbox yesterday. The writer claims to own the lake behind our house and says he is "looking into avenues" of sale on the property. He doesn't own any land, just the lake. And now he wants to sell it.

It's as though someone just told me I have to pay for the air or the ocean. There is a whole ecosystem

i'd call the tax records in the municipality where you live and find out who owns the lake parcel. then, have it designated a mitigated wetland by an environmental group or a municipal planner, and then nobody can touch it, and you don't have to buy it. ;)
