Christmas Eve. Time to get some shopping done.

All the imperative gifts have been purchased, save one, for my great-aunt. I have things for my parents, my uncle and my grandmother, but I've had trouble finding something for my great-aunt. Not that there aren't plenty of other people I still need to shop for, but she's the only one among them who I'm likely to exchange gifts with tomorrow ( Read more... )

Could be worse. A few short decades ago Roman Catholics were still offering up their services in Latin. The ever forward-thinking Ukrainian Catholic church still says their masses in 14th-century Ukrainian.

And believe me when I say you won't be the only one in that church mouthing the words while doing their shopping lists in their head... you probably wouldn't even be in the minority.

That doesn't sound so bad. The pesky things about Anglicans is that you just know there's going to be some English in those hymns. That moves the choke point from language recognition to critically bad vocal cords.

When I've attended Ukrainian services it's been quite easy because I just assume no one expects me to actually participate. I just have to cultivate the right mix of reverence and stoicism that says "I have no idea what anyone's talking about here, but I accept that it's likely very important."

This post kind of reminds me of being in Texas last year :P Staying with devout Southern Baptists; prayers before meals, going to church... man was I out of place... and being Canadian on top of that! :)
