Character name: Yusuke Urameshi
Fandom: Yu Yu Hakusho
Timeline: Mid-Chapter Black, aka episode 75
Age: 14
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: JEEBUS WHERE DO I BEGIN

Yusuke's assets pretty much lie in his ability to channel his energy through his body and his physical strength, though his stamina and spiritual awareness also factor into it as well! Most of his attacks reflect this pretty well, AS I WILL ATTEMPT TO EXPLAIN THEM TO YOU.

Spirit Gun- His signature attack! Imagine Goku's Kamehameha. Now imagine that fired through a finger instead of a palm. THAT'S PRETTY MUCH ALL THERE IS TO IT. He channels his spirit energy to the tip of his index finger (though it's been implied he can fire it from any one), and then releases it in a blast of sheer power. Depending on how mad or determined he is, the shot can be immensely huge and deadly, and it's been known to cause a good amount of damage. However! Against an equally strong blast, it can scatter and cancel out, and Yusuke's aim isn't always the best, so it's not foolproof. He is also limited to using it four times a day (lest he exhausts himself), so it's really his big guns in terms of fighting.

Shotgun- A multiple target version of the Spirit Gun, he channels it through his fist instead of his finger, releasing energy in smaller scatters. It's an effective way to ward someone off or hit a moving target, but the energy blasts are considerably weaker compared to his regular Spirit Gun.

Spirit Wave- Another variation of the Spirit Gun; however, instead of using his finger to channel the energy, he uses his whole body as a weapon. It's an incredibly useful close range attack, but it's risky to use, and dangerous for both him and whoever it's directed at. It's also said to have healing abilities on the user as well, as it patched up the gunshot wounds Sensui inflicted upon Yusuke during their fight though he isn't from that point yet DERP DERP

Aside from those, he is also stupidly strong for a human boy, as his punches and kicks alone can seriously damage someone if they're not up to his level. Even before he died, he was able to take down men twice his age and size with ease, so that, plus all of his training, makes him a rather formidable beast to take on. His punches at this current point in canon can cause shock waves at 30% of his power, so...yeah, that definitely says something. His stamina and speed are also nothing to sneeze at (NEVER PUT HIM ON A BIKE DEAR LORD), making him a obstinate little bugger to knock down during a fight. And heaven help you if you make him mad, or put any of his friends in mortal danger, as his energy and power seems to INCREASE when he's under physical or emotional strain. Of course, at this point in canon, he's only at upper-B class (in a scale from D to A and Super S), so he is most definitely not invincible when it comes to any god-mode types around here.

On another note, his spiritual awareness is pretty strong, being able to sense demons and other supernatural creatures with relative ease. It's not as sharp as some of the other characters in the show (like the Kuwabara siblings and Genkai), so he doesn't get odd premonitions or anything like that, but he has enough to get an idea of what a person can be capable of, and where they happen to be. Of course, he doesn't use it ALL the time, as he's more of a "hit it first, figure it out later" sort of guy, but it's useful when he needs to see things most normal people can't see.

How would they use their abilities?: For his flashier, spirit based powers, it would be on a need-be basis. Yusuke, while reckless and impulsive, still understands the line between necessary measures and wanton destruction, so he won't be firing his finger at things unless he's against someone as strong as himself or he really has to. However, for his general fighting abilities, he's...quite a battle junkie, and probably wouldn't mind duking it out with someone should they ask. Whether or not he goes all out power-wise is up to whoever challenges him \o__o/ In short, big-ass aliens and refugees who want to cause trouble will get the finger, regular people and harmless things will not.

As for his spiritual awareness, he'll just be using it to figure out if there's any demons or any other interesting thing on the ship that reminds him of home. For the most part, if he does run into any supernatural people/things here, he won't be jumping to attack them, as he's familiar with the fact that not all demons or other beasties are necessarily evil.

Appearance: Yusuke leans on the short side of the teenage boy spectrum, being somewhere between 5'6-5'8. Sadly, canon doesn't exactly specify, so it's a reasonable guess in comparison to the other character's heights in the series! He's rather lean and muscular for his age, giving him a bit of a gangly look when he doesn't have any clothes on. He has brown eyes and short black hair, the latter which always seems to be tinted green since it's constantly slicked back into a classic 90's Japanese punk hair-do. On the rare occasion he leaves his hair alone (i.e, when he's sleeping, or just took a shower, or had it messed up in a fight), it's rather fluffy (for lack of a better word) and flippy, making him somewhat unrecognizable at first glance. Pictures are AWESOME.

Fashion-wise, he'll be arriving on the Thor in his school uniform, which is the traditional Japanese boy's style, albeit in green because fuck conforming to school rules, he can do what he wants. Eventually, when he gets more money on the ship, he'll probably swap that for something more casual, like jeans and a jacket, though it's to be said he has a rather questionable sense of style at times.

Background: If you need a consultant on building a bad rep, Yusuke Urameshi is your guy. Known as the strongest and toughest student at Sarayashiki Junior High, he was the poster boy of juvenile delinquency; never went to school, failed extraordinarily in his classes, and constantly picked fights with his peers, including some of his teachers. Naturally, this caused him to be widely feared by most of his classmates, causing rumors to fly that he ran a three-hundred man gang and could beat someone silly if they even looked at him the wrong way. However, despite his numerous short-comings, Yusuke was nowhere as bad as the gossip about him made him out to be. The only people who could see that happened to be his childhood friend, Keiko Yukimura, and, to an extent, his rival, Kazuma Kuwabara. But instead of defending his name and proving his classmates wrong, Yusuke instead beat up anybody who bad-mouthed him, which only worsened his image as opposed to help it. Not that one could blame him for constantly being angry though; along with his rather poor social life, he was also raised by his young, alcoholic mother, known to spend nights on end out partying as opposed to watching after her son. With an upbringing like that, it was only natural Yusuke became rather bitter about life, thumbing his nose at most things that came his way.

It all happened on a seemingly normal day. He went to school. He got harassed by Keiko. He got blamed for something. He skipped school. He kicked Kuwabara's ass. He went home and got berated by his mother. He left. All in all, it was a rather average day in the life of Yusuke Urameshi. It wasn't until he ran into a little kid playing dangerously near the street that things started to get a little different. Hoping to dissuade the child from getting hurt, he entertains the boy in a rather...interesting way, before heading off to waste time again. Sadly, it wasn't as easy as that. Forgetting Yusuke's earlier warning, the child continued to play next to the road, until ultimately the ball rolled out into traffic. Which wouldn't be quite as bad if it weren't for the fact that there was a car gunning straight towards him. Yusuke, in an act that was selfless and completely out of character for himself, leaps out into the street to shove the child out of the way and saves him. However, by doing that act, he took the brunt of the hit, and thus becomes roadkill. Oops.

...Of course, this wouldn't be the beast of the series it is if the main character stayed dead for the rest of the show. After awakening as a ghost from the shock of his death (and having the bizarre experience of seeing his dead body on the ground), Yusuke is then greeted by the very last person you'd expect to be the ferryman of death; a bubbly, optimistic, blue-haired woman named Botan. It seems Yusuke wound up failing in both life AND death, since it turned out the child he saved actually wasn't going to be hit be the car regardless of Yusuke's intervention; in fact, Botan calls his sacrifice "an utter waste". However, no one in the Spirit World (aka where people get sent to be judged for the afterlife) anticipated him risking his life to save someone with a disposition such as his, so Yusuke actually ended up dying before he was destined to, which is something that rarely happens. Since no one on the other side was prepared to have him dead so soon, there wasn't any space for his spirit to go; so in return for their blunder, Yusuke could be brought back to life if he wished. He turns down the offer at first, claiming that people would be better off without him. But after being dragged to his own wake by Botan to witness how much he meant to his family and few friends (and most importantly, the little boy he rescued), he changes his mind, determined to return back to life to appreciate it once again.

However, the road to revival wasn't easy, as Yusuke had to go through a number of trials and tests set by the Prince of the Spirit World, the toddler-like Koenma, in order to build good karma in order to be brought back. With the help of Botan and his ghostly hijinks involving Keiko and Kuwabara, Yusuke passes them all, and eventually returns to his body and comes back to life (thanks to a rather Sleeping Beauty-like kiss from Keiko). Yusuke's outlook and attitude changes significantly after his revival, grateful to be alive and appreciative of the people who matter to him the most. Of course, he still remains his bratty self, but his jaded outlook on the world dims quite a bit. But that wasn't the only thing that changed about him when he came back. Soon after his re-awakening, Botan and Koenma appear in his life again, revealing that his experience as a ghost had awakened Yusuke's latent spiritual powers within him. In exchange for bringing him back (as there is always a catch), he was made into a Spirit Detective, a protector of the human realm that tracks down supernatural cases and fights off demons and humans alike who want to cause chaos in it.

After a very brief training by Koenma on how he can utilize his new spirit powers, Yusuke is immediately thrust into his first cases. Told to track down a trio of demon bandits who nicked some highly valuable items from the Spirit World, it pitted him into his first real battles, namely against the brute Goki and the fiery Hiei (the latter who believed using Keiko as bait was a good idea. BOY WAS HE WRONG). However, it unknowingly gained him two future comrades, who ironically were two of the same bandits he was chasing down, the born again kitsune, Kurama, and the previously mentioned Hiei. His second case, which was to protect the renowned aging psychic Genkai from the skill stealing demon Rando, gained him another teammate in his rival-slash-schoolmate Kuwabara, who happened to also have an extremely keen sixth sense. In the end, Yusuke wound up becoming the old woman's disciple, spending six months at her compound to train with her and learn her renowned Spirit Wave technique; her means of 'training', however, which involved snake pits and balancing on spikes for hours on end, were...rather questionable at best. His third case, which brought him and his three new partners together as a team, involved infiltrating a demon city to prevent a group of monsters called the four Saint Beasts from taking over the human race. Yusuke nearly dies taking down their leader, but luckily Kuwabara saves him by transferring some of his life energy into his body.

His fourth case, which was to rescue Hiei's estranged twin sister, Yukina, from a greedy mob boss, wound up pulling him into something much more dangerous. Toguro, one of the 'bodyguards' hired to keep an eye on Yukina, resurfaces a month after the case is resolved, threatening to harm Yusuke's loved ones if he didn't participate in the Dark Tournament. The Dark Tournament, simply put, is an otherworldly competition, pitting demons, and sometimes humans, against one another in order to win any wish they wanted from the committee in charge. Toguro pushes Yusuke to join so they could "have a real fight", having thrown the previous one against the boy in his last case. Yusuke, stuck in a corner (and also being a fighting whore) accepts, going back to Genkai's to vigorously retrain so he could be better prepared. Two months later, with Kuwabara, Kurama, Hiei, and a mysterious masked fighter in tow (who happens to be Genkai in disguise but somehow NO ONE COULD TELL), as Team Urameshi, Yusuke heads for the tournament, intent to take on Toguro once more.

...of course, being the human underdogs that they were (with the exception of Hiei and Kurama), they had to fight their way up to get to Toguro, making it through the rounds by the skins of their teeth. It didn't help that the committee was constantly being bribed by the other team owners, manipulating the rules against Yusuke's team in favor of their own, either. But with true shonen grit, they pushed through, making allies and growing stronger with each match. In Yusuke's case, Genkai (after finally revealing her identity as the Masked Fighter to him), decided it was a good time to pass along her legacy to her student, and have him inherit most of her power so he could have a fighting chance against Toguro. However, that involved sticking him in a cave and shoving a ball of pure energy into his body, thus causing his body to destroy itself from the inside out. Thankfully, motivated by the suffering it was causing his spirit beast (an animal that reflects the true inner nature and feelings of a person), Puu, Yusuke gets the determination to overcome the pain and absorb the power inside of him.

Naturally, this caused him to pass out afterward and miss the semi-finals, only to be awakened the next day by an unexplained panic. It turned out his sudden unease had good grounds-- apparently Genkai and Toguro knew each other back in the day, and were fighting to the death at that very moment. Running to find her, he arrives once Toguro had threw his final blow, delivering a fatal wound to his master. With her last breaths, she warns Yusuke not to become like the other man, who threw away his humanity for youth and strength, before perishing in her student's arms. Yusuke, shaken from his teacher's death, and seething with rage, vows to avenge Genkai's death and defeat Toguro once and for all. Once at the finals, Yusuke and Toguro finally face off, though it seems that even with his fury and extra energy, he can't match up to the greater demon's power. In order to get Yusuke to his full potential, Toguro decides to kill Kuwabara in front of his eyes, causing Yusuke to snap and finally break that remaining wall that held him back. It did the trick, and Yusuke soundly defeated him, devastated by not being able to protect his friend.

...however, in the end, it turned out Kuwabara was trolling Yusuke and only pretended to be dead to give him the kick in the pants he needed, aided in that little trick by his other teammates in order to push him along. And since no one in a shonen series stays dead except for bad guys, Koenma wound up reviving Genkai as fulfillment of the wish they earned for winning the tournament, because when you're the Prince of the Spirit World, you can do that shit.

Unfortunately, the peace only lasts for a month or so in the human realm, when something new starts to rear it's head. Humans in a little city near Sarayashiki were developing odd powers out of nowhere, troubling the Spirit World greatly. To teach Yusuke about this new threat, Genkai (cranky and kicking as always) has him kidnapped by three of these strangely powered people, using a new ability called a 'Territory'. Territories, in essence, are separate dimensions a user can generate at will, usually matching their disposition or skills; for example, being able to immobilize somebody by their shadow or taking someone's soul if they say the wrong word. After being 'rescued' by his team and soundly berated for charging into a situation without thinking, Yusuke learns the true reason for these boys' powers: a hole to the Demon World was being opened up in their town, and the resulting energy unrest was affecting the people around it.

The team travels to investigate the next day, on the look out for any new psychics who would know or help with this new issue. Yusuke winds up finding a lead in the mind reader Murota, who targets the person behind the plan in the crowd, a man bent on ending humanity who refers to himself as "Black Angel". Unfortunately, immediately after Yusuke spots him, Murota is shot in the head, sending Yusuke's team along for the ride to the hospital. Once there, they realize it's a trap, set up by one of "Black Angel"'s henchmen, a doctor who goes by the codename..."Doctor". Yeah, they don't get too original in this series. Releasing his Territory, which involves lethal disease spreading bugs, into the hospital, he claims anyone infected will die if he isn't incapacitated in thirty minutes. Yusuke, always looking for an excuse to kick someone's ass, fights him, trying to save those already bitten by the Doctor's bugs. Although the Doctor goads Yusuke to kill him, in order to prove how depraved humanity is, Yusuke struggles to find the will to do so, the thought of ending the other man's life making him sick. In the end, Yusuke delivers a blow strong enough to nearly murder the Doctor, though Genkai kick starts his body later to ease the potential guilt off of Yusuke's conscious.

About a week after the fight, more troubling news comes from Botan at Yusuke's school. Apparently the demon hole, which they assumed was rather small and progressing at a slow rate, was actually a cross section of the real hole, which was much larger and underground. The geometry of it flies over Yusuke's head, but he gets the jist-- the deadline to close the hole had been pushed up, putting them on a tighter schedule to save the world.

...or not, as the world decided to blow up while he was taking a nap on the school roof afterward. WHOOPS.

Personality: In short, Yusuke Urameshi is a funbag full of flaws. He's brash, loud, crude, impatient, reckless and violent, all with a hot-headed temper and massive stupidity to round it all out. He's lazy, and absolutely hates any form of authority, constantly griping about cases Koenma gives him until Botan bribes or beats him up to do it. He's rather cocky as well, talking big about his abilities before even figuring out what his opponent's skills are. He is painfully honest and has a sharp, sarcastic tongue, so if he thinks you or a certain situation is stupid, he will be the first to let you know and make fun of you for it. He can be a stubborn brat when he wants to be, pushing aside maturity in favor for what he wants to do, and striking out on his own if he gets angry enough.

However, despite ALL OF THAT, he's actually a good guy once you get to know him. Deep down inside, he has a heart of gold and a good sense for what's wrong and what's right, and it's not really that hard to see once you get past his Mr. Tough Guy exterior. Like most shonen protagonists, Yusuke has that leader type of charisma that somehow gets former rivals and even some enemies to like him, bonding over battles and fighting and the like. He can have an almost childlike enthusiasm in the odd occasions he gets excited for something, which in turn makes sense as he is rather good with and fond of young children himself.

Because of his experience with death, Yusuke deeply respects and cares for his friends and family, and if you mess with them or harm them in anyway, he'll give no second thought to introducing his fist with your face. Yusuke/Fighting is a canon OTP and EVERYONE KNOWS IT. It doesn't matter if it's a friendly sparring match, a scuffle between a rival, or an epic life-or-death brawl; if it involves duking it out with someone, he'll be there. As Genkai quotes in the dub, "If Yusuke wasn't in constant danger, he'd die of boredom". The more thrilling and dangerous the match, the better, as he is one hell of a battle-junkie. Of course, while he doesn't discriminate between opponents (during the Yukina arc, he had no issues going against seemingly female fighter, because "she's a fighter and she wants to fight!"), he won't pick a fight someone who's drastically weaker than him, unless they piss him off to the point where they really ask for it.

Have you read up on how the game works?: Yes! The FlamingFerret is the plug-in that allows people to communicate with one another on the S.S Thor, and you can earn money by mooching, stealing, and...you know, that whole "working" thing.

1st person sample:

[The video feed flickers on to the almost deafening sound of thumping, as if someone was tapping a finger against the guide. A pair of eyes peer into the camera, brow furrowing slightly in confusion.]

Heeeeeeeey? This thing on? One, two, calling the mothership, do you read me? Man, this feels stupid, and that's a lot coming from me...

[After a few moments of disorienting shifts and movements, the video pulls back to arm's length, showing a rather irritated looking boy scowling at the screen]

Alright, listen up! I'll skip asking the obvious questions here, since I'm sure I'm gonna get some sort of bull answer no matter what. But if anyone can direct me to whoever's in charge of this sci-fi geek's fantasy, I have five pounds of paperwork and a stupid towel I'd like to personally introduce to his ass. There's no way in hell I'm sitting around filling out all that garbage when I got friends to try to find and people to beat up.

[There's a slight pause, and his expression eases up just the tiniest.]

... also, whoever's behind the advertising here? Better start looking for another job, since 'Don't Panic' isn't exactly the best thing to tell someone who just lost their world.

[At that, the feed cuts.]

3rd person sample:

There was a sort of irony at the timing of all of this.

Was it just yesterday that he and the others were panicking about demons coming into their world, to destroy life as they knew it? Wasn't it just a week before that they set out to try to stop it from happening? At the time, a demonic invasion was the worst case scenario in Yusuke's mind, sure that things would go to hell in a hand basket, quite literally, if he didn't bust his ass as usual to save the world.

He never even considered the possibility of the entire planet blowing up before it was even completed, though.

Was it the work of "Black Angel", the man behind the dimensional distortion? A sort of fail safe in case something went wrong? He did want humanity dead, after all, but it didn't make sense to destroy everything because of one minor annoyance. It was like cutting off a foot when you stubbed your toe.

But Yusuke wasn't going to dwell on that. Being on this weird ship was headache inducing as it is, and he was never the one to ponder on a topic for too long. Heaving a sigh, he chucked his paperwork, along with that ridiculous towel, into the corner of his room. Losing the world was bad enough, but he didn't even have any idea of what happened to his friends. Did Kuwabara managed to survive? Kurama? Hiei?

... Keiko?

He grit his teeth, and headed towards the door. He never won any medals for hard work, but dammit, he was going to find his friends if it was the last thing he did. If he was the only survivor of his planet, then boy, these aliens sure knew how to pick the worst examples of humanity to salvage. There'd be hell to pay if they didn't rescue at least one of the people he cared about on this stinking ship.

... of course, he had never fought an alien before, but hey, it was something he could add to his list of awesome fights that didn't happen sooner.

Questions?: Could Yusuke bring along his spirit beast Puu? He's tiny and is pretty much a pet thing, so he won't cause too much damage ;3;b
