dietary elitism

While I don't have a perfect record for choosing the "healthy choice", I take a certain amount of pride in the food I make, eat and share. There might even be a point system for how often I pull off vegan fair, and celebrate avoiding "inappropriate indulgences". Now, this is not to say that I am seriously trying to go vegan/organic/homemade, but I ( Read more... )

Would you have made a good South American Indian-type 400-500 years ago? Labour intensive was the preparation of people! Considered spanish devilied Spanish. First you have to raid their landing parties, then you have to capture them alive, then you have to not catch the new and deadly diseases they bring, then you have to fatten them up without them escaping (picture this, 400 Inca next to a cliff overlooking the Atlantic crashing against the rocks, surrounding 3 Spanish conquistadores and 8 Spanish sailors. An Inca warrior goes around poking them in the ribs. He turns to his buddies and says "awwwww, this one's too thin, throw him back"). Lastly, you have to hope that the high priest gives you a good appendage after the sacrifice on the altar (poor Atahaulpa and his fishy tasting "sausage"! He'd been so embarrassed!). Well, I won't leap to the defense of all your culinary prejudices, but I think you're selling home-cooking short in at least one respect. It's possible to get a tastier, more healthful, and/or cheaper meal commercially than anything you or I would make at home, but such a meal-by-meal analysis is incomplete. I claim that on average people who cook for themselves do as well or better on all these measures than people who don't. In your case, probably a lot better. So in that sense at least some of your feelings of gastronomic superiority are well-founded.

yay for food! On an unrelated note: CDD is performing at Christ Church on December 9th. And we're also singing with the St Laurence Choir at the Oscar Peterson Hall on Dec 2, at both 3pm and 7:30.

And if you have a chunk of time you're willing to part with, we may need a mezzo/alto for next term. It's a huge commitment, but it's so incredibly worth it if you can manage.
