"Okay, I`m leaving now." Colby shut down his computer and started collecting his
things. His back bag and other hiking gears were already in his car.
"Are you leaving right away?" Megan lifted her eyes from her monitor.
"Yeah, I`ll just grab Charlie from CalSci. We should be at the cabin before nine."
"One more thing."
"What?"
"Be careful."
"I will." Colby was a little surprised. There had to be something behind the
sudden concern.
"No, I mean it. I made a bet on you."
"A bet?"
"Don`t look so stunned, almost the whole floor is betting on it. Giles from the
archives is handling it."
"Betting on what?"
"Betting on the condition you`ll came back in. People still remember how Don was
after his hiking trip with Charlie. He came back wrecked and had to see a doctor
on his injuries. Just tell Charlie to go easy on you."
Colby tried not to laugh. "What exactly was your bet?"
"That you`ll be sleep deprived, but still able to walk."
"I`m in good shape, I think I can out hike a math professor."
"Well see about that... Have a fun trip."
"I will." Colby picked up his bag and headed for the elevators.
"See you on Monday!" David added from behind his desk.
"I still don`t get it." David murmured.
"Get what?"
"Colby and Charlie. I mean, how long can that last? Sure, he`s going hiking
with him, but what do they really have in common?"
"Well, you saw those pictures..."
"Don`t remind me. I`m still having nightmares."
Megan giggled. "You want to talk about them?"
"No. I`m fine with the fact that Colby`s dating a guy, but there`s some things
about my co-workers, that I never want to know."
"Like the fact that Colby wasn`t on top?"
David let out a frustrated sigh. "You are really enjoying this, aren`t you?"
"I am. Come on, let`s go to Kelly`s. We`ll get some food and I can give you
a free therapy session."
"You let your patient have beer during the session?"
"Of course."
"Okay, let`s go."
---------------------------------------------------------
Don stepped in and shut the front door behind him.
"Dad! Are you in here?"
"In the kitchen!"
Don followed the voice and found Alan chopping vegetables.
"What are you cooking?"
"I`m trying that tuna-vegetable-stew-thing your mother liked."
"How`s it going?"
"Honestly... I`m starting to understand why she made it only few times a year.
But did you have something you wanted to talk about, or did you just come
here to bum a free meal?"
"I never say no to free food, but actually I came to get some files I sent to
Charlie for a case. He said he would leave them for me."
"In the living room, next to the couch. In a cardboard box."
Don went back to the living room and found the box. On top of it was a thick
envelope. "Dad, is this yours?"
"Is what mine?"
"This envelope."
"No, Charlie left it."
Don opened the envelope and dumped it`s content to the coffee table.
It contained a cell phone and a note.
"What`s in the note?" Alan came from the kitchen, drying his hands on a dish towel.
"It says.." Don unfolded the piece of paper. "Don, here`s Colby`s phone. Don`t even
try to reach us, because we are going to enjoy our trip without interruptions. We`ll
be back late Sunday evening. Enjoy your weekend. Charlie."
"I must admit, your brother knows you well." Alan chuckled and looked over Don`s
shoulder to see the note.
"Colby was looking for his phone in the afternoon..." Then realization hit on Don.
"...after Charlie had been in the office."
Alan let out a sigh and smirked. "Those two a quite a pair."
"Well that`s one description for it.." Don slumped down on the couch and Alan
sat next to him. "And you really are okay with them?"
"Think about it this way." Alan leaned back against the cushions. "I haven`t had much
success with those few dates I have had after your mother. None of your relationships
have lasted for long. Maybe we should just be happy that at least on Eppes man has
more luck on those things. And I they seem to be a good match."
"I guess. I`m still trying to get used to the whole thing. First Colby joins my team and
I have to get used to having him as a co-worker. Now I have to get used to him as my
brothers boyfriend! It just.. need time for that, but it`s getting easier."
"That`s good. And if it bothers you, I have a trick I do when they spend the night at
Charlie`s bedroom."
"What trick?"
"It`s very easy. I simply put on earplugs, and I don`t need to be embarrassed when
I see them in the morning."
---------------------------------------------------------
"I know you and Colby didn`t exactly get on well in the beginning, but I thought you had
gotten over it." Megan set her utensils down on her empty plate and gulped down the
last of her beer.
"We did get over it! And I wish them all the best. Honestly. I just can`t see how that
thing could work in the long run."
"Are you kidding? A brainy genius from L.A. and a Lutheran farm boy from Idaho!
It`s so weird it will probably work."
