Chapter 1/2

“Why are you whispering?”

“They’re asleep.” Morgan hushed. “The kid almost woke up when my phone started ringing.”
“Both of them are asleep?” Garcia checked.
“Yep. It’s pretty cute actually. Baby’s sleeping on his chest and drooling all over his sweater vest.”
“Sounds adorable.”
“And the best thing is that now I have a reason to throw away that hideous thing….”
“The baby?”
“The sweater vest. You have no idea how long I’ve been waiting for this…..”
--------------------------------------------

“Chad?” Hotch closed his cell phone and pushed it back to his pocket. “Hailey’s coming to pick up Jack after seven so I don’t need to drive him after all.” He walked into the kitchen and paused. For a minute he just stared at the large stack of eggs on the kitchen counter.

“Chad, I told about Hailey’s plans under the strictest confidence.”
“What do you mean?” Chad glanced up from his chore of buttering up small serving pans.
“I mean these.” Hotch pointed at the amount of eggs.
“You mean am I gonna make a crack about her eggs?”
“Well, are you?”
“Those are for the zabaglione.”
“What?”
“Last time Jack was here he saw that cooking show on TV and spent the next three hours trying to pronounce it correctly, remember? I promised we’d try to make some next time he’s here.”
“So you’re not…..?”
“Making fun of her egg deficiency?”
“I think that’s a whole new term for it….”
“And don’t worry, I’ll leave out the wine.”
“Wine?”
“From the zabaglione.”
“Right.” Chad continued greasing the pans and Hotch leaned against the wall, looking extremely uncomfortable. “Just say it.”

“What?”
“Whatever you’ve been trying to say since yesterday.”
“How did you know…?”
“I can see it when you leave something out. What is it?”
“When I talked with Hailey yesterday…. I didn’t tell you the whole truth. They are trying to get a child via IVF, but they can’t use the fiancé’s sperm.”
“Why not?”
“There’s some hereditary illnesses in his family, so she doesn’t want to take the risk.”
“Where are you going with this?”
“They are going to use both donor sperm and donor eggs.”
“You mean….” Chad started chuckling. “Don’t tell me she wants you to make a donation.”

“She doesn’t.” Hotch swallowed down the lump in his throat. “She wants you.”

The laughed stopped right away. For a minute Chad just stared at him.

“Can you repeat that?”
“She wants you to be the donor. She was here some time ago and she saw the results from your medical check….”
“And she just decided she wants to have a child with me?”
“Apparently she was really impressed by your blood pressure and cholesterol levels.”
“Really?” Chad lifted his eyebrows. “You wouldn’t happen to have the number for Child Protection Services?”
“Why?”
“Poor Jack`s living with a lunatic.”
“So you wont-”
“Make out with a test-tube? No way.”
“Good, because I wouldn’t want to explain that to Jack.”
“Yeah.” Chad agreed. “Besides, I got some suspicions about her motives.”
“What suspicions?”

“According to my sister, a mix raced baby is the second best thing in the baby market these days, right after Cambodian orphans.”

--------------------------------------------

“Pretty Boy.”

“Yeah.” Reid sniffed.
“That kid was here less than twenty-four hours.”
“So?”
“Nothing.” Morgan shrugged. “I just didn’t predict you’d get misty-eyed when they came to get their kid.”
“I’m not misty-eyed.”
“Yeah, you’re sniffing just for the fun of it….”
“It’s hay fever.”
“In the middle of autumn?”
“Morgan-”
“I’ll stop when you admit it.”
“What do you want me to admit?”
“That you liked having a baby here for a while.”
“I can admit that. The temporary status of a babysitter instead of a primary caretaker took away most of the parental pressure and there is certain nursing instincts that were awoken by the overall softness of a small infant.”

“Or in plain English: You’re a big softie.”

“I have the basic human sentiments and instincts of a human being, taking care of the younger member of the same specie is a universal trait.”
“Call it what you want, Daddy-O.”
“Morgan, you know what happens when you use unacceptable terms of endearment.”
“I’m on the couch?”
“Yep.”
“Okay…. How bout Hot Papa?”
“I’m warning you….”
“Pretty Boy?”
“That’s the old reliable.”
“I’ll stick to it.”
