“I need to talk to you.” David almost tackled Colby, when he arrived to his
workstation. “I need some help.”
“What kinda help?” Colby asked and started unpacking his bag.
“Remember that thing we talked about some time ago?” David kept glancing
over his shoulder.
“We talked about a lot of things some time ago.”
“You know what I mean! That…telephone thing.”
“Phone sex?”
“Keep your voice down! We’re in the office.”
“You brought it up. And last time we talked about it, you said you weren’t
that desperate.”
“Well, after Ian’s two weeks in L.A. got postponed, I am that desperate.”
“Why do you want to talk about it with me. Call Ian and talk to him.”
“That’s the thing.”
“The thing?”
“I need… Instructions. What do I say?”
Colby gave him a skeptical look. “Are you serious?”
“Yeah. Just give me some ideas. What do you and Charlie say when you…
do that stuff?”
“Well… usually I tell him what I would like him to do to me, and what I
want to do to him, and so on. After a while the whole conversation seems
to have a life of it’s own.”
“So, it’s that simple?”
“Pretty much. Somehow Charlie always manages to include some math
babble to our… conversations.”
“Seriously?”
“It’s pretty exiting. When he starts doing that, the whole thing almost gets
out of my hand…”
David stared at him and Colby blushed. “Not literally. Anyway, If your gonna
try it with Edgerton, you could try to insert words like ``fire arms`, and
`ammunition` and `target` to the conversation.”
“Sounds weird, but I think that could actually work…”
The consultation was interrupted by a cell phone beeping. Colby dug his cell
from his pocket, and snapped it open. “This got to be wrong…”
“What?”
“First I was thinking somebody sent his message to a wrong number, but this
isn’t my phone at all. I think I grabbed Charlie’s phone in the morning and
I didn’t even notice.”
“Call Charlie and ask him to drop by so you two can change them again.”
“Probably a good idea.” Colby selected his own number and waited. “The
line is busy.
“He’ll be here in the afternoon anyway, just wait till then.”
-----------------------------------
As it turned out, Colby didn’t need to wait till afternoon, since Charlie made
a surprise entrance to the break room during the team’s lunch break.
“Hey, my class was canceled, so came a bit early.”
“Why canceled?” Don asked with his mouth full of chicken sandwich.
“Because of the flu wave. Half of all the students are sick, and there was no
reason to have the auditorium reserved for a handful of people. All the smaller
rooms are booked, so we’re gonna have to do that class some other time.”
“Some other time… Gotta love the flexibility of fancy, high end universities.”
Don commented.
“Be careful, Don, your bitterness is showing.” Charlie smirked. “It makes
you look older than you are.”
“Thanks for the tip.”
“Your welcome. Colby, do you have my cell?”
“You got mine?”
“Yep.”
Colby tossed the phone to Charlie and got another one back in return.
“And by the way, your mom called.” Charlie opened his cell and started to
read his messages.
The whole room had gone quiet and Don, Megan and David were all staring at
Colby. Charlie raised his eyes from his phone and noticed the same look all the
others had noticed. Colby was white as a sheet and looked like he had just seen
a ghost.
“I think he’s pretty upset.” David commented.
“He`s either upset, or impersonating Don…” Megan continued.
“She c-c-c-c-called you?” Colby’s voice was shaking so badly Charlie could
hardly hear him.
“I thought it might be something important, so I answered.” Charlie explained.
“Who did you tell her you were?”
“Your roomie. According to her you didn’t even tell her you were moving.
She was very disappointed in you.”
“Exactly how long did you talk with her?”
“Maybe…hmm…. Half an hour? We had a really nice chat.” Charlie smiled.
“She’s coming to L.A. next week.”
“Next week?”
“Yeah, she had her flight and hotel booked already.”
“Already?”
“But I told her it was just ridiculous.”
“Ridiculous?”
“I told her she could use my old room at the house. We still have a
bed there, and all that stuff. She was very excited.”
“Excited?”
“Would you stop that! It’s creepy. She’s coming on Monday, and don’t
repeat that!”
“Charlie…” Colby buried his face with his hands and mumbled through his
fingers. “Please, tell me I’m imagining things. I don’t care if my heads a
little woozy as long as all that is just a hallucination.”
“Granger! You don’t talk about your mother like that.” Megan said, trying to
keep her laughter inside. “She already knows about you and Charlie, right?”
Colby grabbed his head even tighter and shook it left and right. David sat
down next to him and gave him a pat on the back.
“Thanks, Granger. After that, my problem seems very small.”
