Morgan sat down next to him on the couch and yanked the ear buds away from the genius followed by his laptop.
“I was working!”
“I called your name four times and you didn’t respond.” Morgan shoved a cellphone to Reid’s hand. “You missed a call.”
“Couldn’t you answer it?”
“I just checked that it wasn’t from work and waited for you to snap out of your trance. You’ve been tapping those keys for hours like a mad man on speed.”
“I had a breakthrough with my article.” Reid selected missed calls and read the number. “Never seen this before.”
“Are you sure?”
“I would remember. If it was important, he’ll call again. And don’t say it.”
“Say what?”
“You know what. You’re not having Garcia check it out.”
“It could be some total perv, waiting for a chance to-”
“It could just as well be a wrong number.”
“No. With our luck, it had to be some perverted lunatic, who wants to make homemade popsicles using your ribs as sticks. If he calls again, I’ll call Garcia.”
“It was one phone call!”
“And you’re a magnet for nutcases. I’m not taking any risks.”
------------------------
She shoved her phone back into her pocket and walked up to the front door to ring the doorbell. Few minutes later the door was opened few inches till the safety chain stopped it, and a pair of serious eyes stared at her from the height of her waist.
“Hey.” She crouched down to one knee so she was face to face with the boy. “You must be Jack. Remember me?”
“No.”
“Well, you were really small the last time I saw you. Is your daddy or mommy home?”
“No.”
“You’re not alone, are you?”
“No.”
“Well… are you with a babysitter?”
“No.”
“Right… Do you know when your daddy’s coming home?”
“No.”
“Is he away for work?”
“No.”
“So he’s coming back soon?”
“No.”
“Jack, what have I told you about opening the door when you`re alone?” Male voice echoed from somewhere inside the house. She saw a quick flash of the man before the door was closed. There was a clinkering noise of the chain being removed and the door was opened again.
“Hello.” The man leaned against the doorframe and waited for her to say something.
“Hello.” She offered him her hand and got a firm handshake. “I was looking for Aaron Hotchner.”
“He went to get some groceries, he should be back soon. Sorry I didn’t hear the doorbell, I was out in the backyard. The lawn grows so fast you wouldn’t believe it.”
“Of course, I…” She took a quick glance up and down the man. He was dressed in a pair of cut-off shorts and flip-flops. Sweaty upper body backed up his claims about outdoor activities. “Sorry, is Hailey here?”
“She hasn’t lived here for a long time.” The man pushed a wave of dark curls off his forehead and gave her a little smile. “You wanna come in and wait for Aaron?”
“I… No thanks, I’ll try again later.”
“I could take a message and ask him to call you.” He tilted his head and the curl fell right back where they had been. “He should be home pretty soon.”
“No.” She looked down at the little boy who was currently hiding behind the man, like he was a human shield against unwanted visitors. “No, I’ll be around for a while. I’ll come again later.”
She twirled around on her heels and marched down the stairs. She didn’t stop to take a breath till she reached her car, pulling her cellphone out of her pocket on the way. She dialled a number and hoped it was still accurate.
“The plume encrusted Queen of Data Highway. How can I blow your mind?”
“At least something is still same…”
“Who is this?”
“Garcia, it’s me.”
She could almost hear the cogs turning in the blonds head.
“Elle?”
“Yeah. It’s been a while.”
“Yeah, and you have a lot to explain! Where have you been?”
“You should know, you said you could track down anyone who’s alive and consuming.”
“I don’t do that with friends. At least not a lot. Where are you?”
“In my car.” Elle sighed. “Outside Hotch`s house.”
“You’re outside his house and you decide to call me? Just knock on the door.”
“I already did that. And I’ve been to Reid’s place too.” Elle leaned heavily against the car. “What the hell has happened after I left?”
“What part do you mean?”
“I went to Reid’s place and his neighbour said he moved out ages ago. And the new address he left was Morgan’s house.”
“That’s right. Those two are so cute together you just wanna pinch their cheeks. And I don’t mean the one on their faces-”
“Take few steps back. They’re together?”
“Yep.”
“You mean… together?”
“I mean “let’s have a romantic candlelight dinner and then I’ll cuff you to the bed” together.”
“How did that happen?”
“Who cares? I’m still mad at them for finding my spy cams in their bedroom.”
“What about Hotch?”
“I’m still working on it, but it’s hard to get up there to plant them when there’s two agents living in the house-”
“Two agents?” Elle repeated. “Does the other one look like Morgan with more hair?”
“Yeah, he used to shave his head, but I kinda like that curly thing going on there-”
“He’s living in Hotch`s house?”
“Yeah.”
“Why?”
“What do you think?”
“I don’t know what to think. I come back and everything’s changed. Reid and Morgan are an item and Hotch is living with some half-naked guy, who does his lawn and says Hailey hasn’t lived there for a while.”
“Yeah…” Garcia’s tone turned slightly sombre. “They got a divorce.”
“So that guy in there’s a house mate?”
“No.”
“Then spell it out for me.”
“They hooked up and when Chad got a permanent gig in Quantico he moved in.”
“Before or after the divorce?”
“After. You don’t really think our tall, dark and frowning would mess around like that?”
“No, but I… This doesn’t make any sense. What’s next? You’re getting naked with J.J. and Gideon’s shacking up with the mailman?”
“No and no. Gideon left pretty soon after you.”
“Oh…”
“And J.J. has a cute little cop and the cutest little baby you’ll ever see.”
“Are you serious?”
“I never joke about cute cops. And I got a cute one too, but not a cop, and Emily and Rossi would probably be together by now if she wasn’t too smart for that-”
“Who the hell is Emily?”
“You really have a been away a while…”
“Are you home right now?”
“Yeah-”
“Same place?”
“Yeah-”
“I’ll be there in half an hour. I want to hear everything that’s happened when I was gone.”
