“Are you okay?” Hotch asked and sank his teeth to his burger.
“I’m fine, I was just thinking…. I was trying to remember a quote I heard
somewhere.” Reid picked some fries from his plate and bend them between
his fingers. “Something about how we’re all animals and we all have the
necessary instincts to kill if we feel threaded or if we feel it is justified.”
“Sounds familiar.”
“Of course somebody like a professional soldier has to feel justification to
be able to go to a battle. Otherwise he couldn’t do it.”
“Why do you think about that?”
“Do you think I could harm somebody?”
“If you think it’s necessary and you can’t come up with any other solution, yes.”
“I think so too. I always thought I couldn’t do anything like that, but after that
LDSK case, I….. I had to admit that I’m not immune to natural survival impulses.”
“Nobody is. Survival instinct is the one thing that everyone has. Like instincts to
protect children. It’s ingrained to our mind, to make sure we take care of each
other and ourselves.”
“Can you see it?”
“See what?”
“Can you see who is capable of doing harm?”
“I’m not sure what you mean.”
“Have you ever had a situation, where you think you know someone completely
and then see a potential of doing something completely out of character?”
“Yeah. I can give you one example right now. You.”
“Me?” Reid almost choked on his French fries.
“Before the LDSK case I never thought you could do that. Or… I hoped you would
never have to do something like that.”
“I didn’t want to shoot him, I just…. I didn’t even think about it. I just aimed and
pulled the trigger.”
“Do you think you’re different after that?”
“Little bit.”
“But you’re still the same. That’s the whole point. Individual choice. Everyone has
potential to do something like that, but most of humanity never act on it. You didn’t
do it until all other possibilities were gone.”
“You mean….” Reid munched his fries and looked like he was in deep thoughts.
“…that only the actions that individual commits count. Not what he is able to do.”
“Where are you?” Hotch waved his hand in front of Reid’s face. “You looked like
you were miles away."
“I’m here.” Reid gave him a little smile. “And I think you’re right. Thanks.”
“For what?”
“I just needed to get some things sorted out in my head.”
