NUMB3RS Main List “Are you sure you don’t need the medics to take a look at it?” Don asked. Megan
was cradling her arm, still in her tac-gear.
“Yeah, it’s just a scratch. Did we get them all?”
“The whole set.” Don grinned. “Chuck will be proud.”
“He should be, he figured out their location.”
“I meant proud for us, but that works too. Can’t wait to get back and get a shower.”
“I know. Sweat, dust and blood. This is like my soccer practices when I was a kid.”
“You played soccer?”
“No need to look so surprised, Eppes.”
“I just can’t imagine it.”
“I only joined because rugby team was full.” Megan tilted her head to the side to
look past Don. “On second thought, better be safe than sorry. I think I let them
take a look at it.” Megan marched to the medics and Don gave her an amused look.
“What are you smiling at?” David asked and came to Don, carrying a small wooden
case. “And by the way, the whole warehouse was full of these. Serial number filed
off, ready to be sold.” He took the lid off and showed Don five well packaged handguns.
“Looks like Megan’s over her Michael-phase.” He pointed to the temporary medical
unit, where Megan was chatting with a nice looking paramedic. She flipped her hair
back in an theatrical gesture. “That’s definitley flirting.”
“Let her have her fun. Did you call Charlie?”
“Not yet, I had my cell off.” Don pulled out his phone and snapped it open. “Wow…”
“What?”
“Nine missed calls.” Don dialled Charlie s number and waited.
“Hello?”
“Ian?”
“Yeah.”
“Why are answering Chuck’s phone?”
“He’s busy. We’re at the hospital.”
“Hospital?”
“Karen went into labour. They think they need to do a c-section after all.”
“Did you call Granger?”
“Charlie tried to call him from the car, but his phone was off. Then he tried
to contact you, but you didn’t answer either. Get Granger here and fast, he
doesn’t want to miss this.”
“We’re on our way.” Don was about to hung up when he realised something. “One
more thing.”
“Yeah?”
“Why exactly are you there with him?”
“We were looking at fabric samples for the nursery curtains when he got the call.”
“Sorry I asked. We`re coming.” Don cut the call.
“What was that?” David asked.
“The baby. Where`s Granger?”
“He’s still talking to the SWAT guys.”
“Go tell him we’re going, he’s gonna be a daddy.”
“Are they at the hospital already?”
“Yeah.”
“Okay, I’ll call Ian from the car. He’ll kill me if I leave him out of this.”
“Don’t worry, he’s already there.”
“Why?” David asked suspiciously.
“That’s what I asked, and trust me you don’t want to know.”
------------------------------------------
When the three men rushed to the waiting area Ian was talking to an elderly
doctor.
“Eppes! Over here.”
“Is he here yet?” Colby panted.
“Who?”
“The baby!”
“The baby was born half an hour ago. Karen’s still pretty out of it.”
“Where’s Charlie?”
“At the nursery, they just moved the baby there.” Ian pointed down the hallway.
Colby sprinted off.
“How was everything?” David asked. “Was Charlie in there when they…. You know.”
“Cut her open? Yeah, we were both there.”
“And he didn’t faint or something?” Don seemed sceptical.
“No, he just turned white. By the way, I need to have an X-ray.” Ian pulled back
the sleeve of his shirt. There was a dark blue bruise above the wrist.
“How the hell did that happen?”
“I told Charlie to squeeze my hand if he felt like he was a bout to chicken out.
I thought “How much can a math teacher squeeze?”.”
“Are you okay?” Don tried to suppress his grin.
“I think he broke something.” Ian shrugged. “I’ve already seen the baby, so I’ll
have this checked. I’ll come back when it’s done.”
“Okay, and thanks.” Don headed to the nursery.
“You want me to come with you?” David offered.
“You want to hold my hand? I think I’ve had enough of that for one day.”
------------------------------------------
When Colby finally found the nursery, Charlie was standing there next to one of
the cribs, holding a tiny baby. Colby approached them carefully.
“Babe?”
Charlie didn’t react, he seemed to be in total trance. Colby put his hand on his
shoulder. Charlie turned to face him.
“Is he….”
“What?”
“I mean…. he’s ours, but… is he yours or mine?”
“No.” Charlie stated with a little smile.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, that she is a she, not a he.”
“We got a girl?”
“Yeah.”
“Where is it?” Don gasped when he rushed to them.
“She’s over here. And you don’t call little babies “it”. It’s dehumanising.” Charlie
corrected. He pulled the blanky to the side to show off the baby. Don and Granger
looked at the baby and shared a short look.
“She’s Charlie’s.” Colby grinned.
“No question about it.” Don agreed.
