“Morning.” Don knocked on the doorframe on walked in.
“Morning.” Colby came form the kitchen with two mugs of coffee. “You want
one too?”
“Sure, I got some time. Where’s Chuck?”
“Breastfeeding.”
“Can you repeat that?”
“Sorry, I meant he feeding Helen with breast milk.”
“I didn’t even know guys can do that….”
“Not his own. Our surrogate agreed to pump it for her for the first five months.”
“Right….”
“How are you doing?”
“Better. Martin dropped me here. He’ll go get some papers from his office
and then he’ll come get me from here.”
“You’re not going to work?”
“No, he made me call the department shrink. He…. he wrote me two weeks off.”
“You know what you’re gonna do?”
“I didn’t really need to think about it.” Don couldn’t help smiling. “Martin took two
weeks off too, he told them he had a family emergency. He wants to go on a va-
cation together.”
Colby waited. And waited. Finally he had to ask. “And?”
“And what?”
“Sorry, but there’s something seriously weird about this. He told you to take
some time off and go on a vacation, and you just did what he said.”
“So?”
“You didn’t tell him to mind his own business?”
“No.”
“You didn’t tell him that you can handle it yourself?”
“No.”
“I think cows are about to start flying…..”
“Where are they going?” Charlie came down the stairs carrying Helen. “And she’s
just been fed, so be careful.” He handed the baby over to Colby. “She likes to
throw up on you every time she has a chance.”
“I think she’s about to go back to sleep.”
“She likes that too.” Charlie shrugged and turned to Don. “So why are the cows
flying?”
“I’ll give you two some privacy.” Colby went to the kitchen with Helen.
“I’m going on a vacation with Martin. The department shrink gave me two weeks
off. With a condition that I have couple sessions with him when I come back.”
“That’s good. Where are you going?”
“I don’t know yet. He said he would handle the arrangements. We’re leaving as
soon as we can get arrangement in order.”
“He said? And you didn’t start arguing about it?”
“Why is that so hard to believe? Granger just did that same round of questions.”
“It is hard to believe. It’s just…. Not like you.”
“So you think I’m pigheaded.”
“Yep.”
“Normally I would start arguing about that, but I’ll let it go this time.”
“Martin’s really having a good effect on you.”
“Hey, I was never that bad….”
“You were.” Charlie grinned. He didn’t say anything for a minute. “Take care of
yourself, okay?”
“You too.”
