“It’s me, are you awake?” Colby`s voice asked.
“Yeah.”
“Did Helen sleep well?”
“Like a log.”
“Good, listen…. I know it’s Saturday and you probably have plans, but can you
keep her for little while longer? I have to run some errands.”
“Sure, don’t worry about it. How’s Alan?”
“That’s why I have to run some errands.” Colby paused. “Alan died last night.”
“Oh… How Charlie? And Don?”
“Don’s focusing on all the arrangements, and Charlie’s…. well….”
“He’s what?”
“He’s running on overdrive. Last I heard he was doing a list of funeral guests.”
“What do you think they’ll do when they run out of things to do?”
“I don’t know.”
----------------------------------
“Charlie, if we don’t invite her, she’ll come anyway!”
“Nobody likes her!”
“That doesn’t matter, funerals are full of people we don’t like and people we’ll
never see again until one of them dies or gets married.”
“We don’t see them if they die!”
“Would you stop splitting hairs! We have to invite aunt Irene and that’s it. Now
what about uncle Daniel?”
“He died six years ago.”
“He did? I don’t remember that….”
“He got drunk and wrapped his car around a telephone pole.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. Personally I think he did it to get away from aunt Irene. They lived two
blocks apart."
“Poor man….”
“Exactly.” Charlie scribbled some more on his pad.
“I’m back.” Colby announced and walked in. “The caterer is set, and I went
to get the paperwork from the hospital.”
“Thanks.” Don said. Charlie was too encased in his thoughts.
“By the way, why’s the garage door locked? I tried to get in that way, and I had
to go back and through the front door.”
“I locked it.” Charlie commented. “It’s a lot harder to go there when the door’s
locked and the key in a locked drawer. Why where you there?”
“I just wanted to check we still had those few spare chairs stashed there. Are
we going to need them?”
“Don’t know yet…. We just started two hours ago and we already got two pages
of names, because Don can’t leave anyone out.”
“I`m back.” Martin yelled from the door. “Why`s the garage locked?”
“Don’t ask….” Don groaned. “Did you handle the flowers?”
“Yeah, and I called a friend of mine. He has extra tables and stuff like that
in storage so we can borrow them if we need to.”
“Great. I need to go get some fresh clothes and my suit, I’ll be right back.”
“I’ll drive you.” Martin offered.
They left and Colby sat down next to Charlie.
“How are you doing?”
“Pretty good. As long as keep myself busy. Did you call David?”
“Yeah, they’ll bring Helen here after three.”
“They didn’t mind?”
“No. And they send their condolences.”
----------------------------------
“You got a better tie somewhere?” Martin asked as he rummaged Don’s bed-
room closet.
“There’s a full rack of ties there.” Don yelled from the living room.
“Yeah, and it looks like you bough them all at once from a yard sale.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means we’re gonna have to do some speedy shopping.”
“I don’t need a new tie.” Don approached him from behind and pressed himself
against Martin’s back.
“Either we go shopping or we’ll drop by my place to pick up one that cost more
than fifty cents. I need to go get a black suit from home anyway.”
Don snaked his hand around Martin’s waist and placed a little kiss to the crook
of his neck. “They’re not expecting us back for a while. You wanna console me?”
“Don….” Martin removed Don’s hand and turned around to face him. “That’s really
not a good idea.”
“Why not?”
“Because I know you. Every time you’re upset about something your first thought
is sex.
“I just want to get my mind off things for a little while!”
“I know, but you need to keep your mind on things.”
“I don’t want to have my mind on things, I don’t even want to think about it
right now.”
“Don-”
“Mom’s gone and dad’s gone and I don’t want to think about it.”
“If you shut it out, it will come back later.” Martin pulled Don closer. “There’s a
lot of stuff to do, and you and have an entire armada of people to help with them.”
“I know.” Don sighed and leaned against him.
Martin pushed him gently down on the bed and wrapped himself around him like
a human octopus. “But we can have a little nap if you want.”
“Sounds good.” Don mumbled and gave him a kiss. “Thanks.”
