Yay! I was just thinking the other day that I wish you'd post a rec list. Now that I'm done with writing my holmestice piece, I might actually get to READ again ;-)
Safe Distance was great! I'm intrigued by the Time Traveler's Wife one (have you read that book? It's AMAZING). I can't wait to read these :-))
Yay! I'm so glad. Another old HP fandomer has just come into Sherlock and I was going to compile a must read list coming right out of the gate, then realized I had a half-done recs list saved in my gmail drafts and got distracted re-reading anything I hadn't already made comments for.
I read The Time Traveler's Flatmate. OH GOD THE ENDING. [Spoiler (click to open)]He can't be much over 40 or else he'd look noticeably different. OH MAN.
I liked the one-off PWP the author also wrote. Sherlock, you kinky bastard. Spoiler alert for those who haven't read it yet: Sherlock's involuntary time travel means sometimes he encounters his past self... Honestly, I don't think I could do that. It would be too weird.
The trope where John and Sherlock have post-case sex occasionally but they never talk about it because each assumes the other doesn't want a romantic relationship and Sherlock's all sadface, taking whatever scraps of affection he can get - that's a little overused in Johnlock fics but it was done well in this one. And it gave me da feels.
...now I'm going to have to go on TV Tropes and see if there's a name for that.
Ha! I am right now re-reading Safe Distances and put a note in my open comment field that their fic was like a classic misunderstanding trope, only well done.
And regarding the ending of TTF: I KNOW! I was just so fucking blown away. I simultaneously loved the author for their genius and hated them for making me feel like that. I was for days consumed with the thought that Sherlock could have deduced from where he'd come and knew how long he had. And would he act any different, when that time grew close? And how would John react? And oh gods, I made myself cry over all my hypothetical feels.
The impression I got was he couldn't figure out the date but he had a rough idea of the year both from seeing himself and from when he'd been to the future where he no longer existed. I'm guessing he's around 39 because 38 was the oldest we saw him coming back.
And he got nicer in his mid-late 30s; I thought it was John's influence because that's the way canon's gradually heading, but it's also because he knows he doesn't have a lot of time left and when we see him 35-38 and interacting with young John and himself, he's more grateful for that time he gets with them and he's a little kinder and gentler. GIVING MYSELF FEELS JUST TYPING THAT, TBH.
I really liked how the author wove the AU into the canon episodes. When it started with them meeting at Bart's, I started skimming because I get tired of reading the same dialog word-for-word yet again (IDK why authors do that, we've all seen the show). But then it was different! That was cool!
