History is filled with tent-city protests, many of them quelled by military violence. Most of them rose up when things were going badly, but each had a specific purpose.

Your comments suggest you haven't been paying attention to the message, clearly articulated by many: Things aren't just going badly, they are being manipulated for the benefit of a very few to the detriment of everyone else, and that must end.

I can see where you are coming from but i'd have to disagree.

Here in the UK we are undergoing quite crappy period of austerity measures.

I don't think it's to help a few however and whilst i don't like it or fully agree with everything that's being done it's better then the alternative which would have completely messed up the country probably in about 3 years time.

There were, and are, more alternatives to "austerity". The problem is usually, at its heart, based in greed and control; and there is no solution to these things without a change in culture and overall behavior. Austerity per se takes the blame away from the greedy, and places the payment for their misdeeds upon their victims.

In which case why is the occupy movement not doing a lot of charity work, actually being productive rather then just occupying?

The only other alternative as well would be to continue to push the country further into debt, we can see how well that worked in Greece, yeah let's go that route...

yup exactlys! theres some very very odd people with a very odd view of the world .. i mean -- i personally hate stock exchanges .. the way companies literally just gamble their futures in the hope of becoming SUPER RICH.. why didnt anyone learn from the great depression.. but yeah - i dont support the movement fully neither.. theyre just making an eyesore of popular spots around the world and harking on about some kinda idealism which isnt even achievable ¬.¬

most people (not everyone like evil dave cameron says) are having problems at the moment .. how the heck can these people afford to sit on their backsides all day? benefits? why? if not - theyre rich and probably have been funded by money made due to the current situation :P iiiiiiiiiiironnnyyyyy

Pure idealism is never achievable. It aims not just for the moon, but for the universe and every dot and speck within it.

Worse is when idealism is supported by inverse logic and erroneous information: "If there were no police, the world would be a better place" is an example I've heard recently, inverting the truths that police are needed because humans are not all good-hearted, and that the world will not improve until humans find motive and means to improve themselves. Worse, it was defended with bad linguistics and a refusal to understand the tragedy of the commons. The logic was perfect, the knowledge was bad.

OWS recognized that people cannot all know the right way to solve a problem, and that a problem on such a large scale cannot be addressed by individuals working separately. They're still out there. Maybe not camping in public spaces so much, but the movement didn't die just because a few gathering places were taken away by established powers.

Eyesore or not, tent cities are the usual response to a displaced people.
