Let me talk to you about Alan Wake

Cut for those who want to know absolutely nothing about the game (and I recommend going in as dark as you can); there are spoilers up to Episode 2.
First off: this is like a fantastic Stephen King story. It doesn't hurt that SK's name are the first two words uttered in the game to set the mood. The town, during the opening, is that kind of off-kilter small town King writes really well.
My two main sticking points that had be back-and-forth between this and Red Dead Redemption, the "shine the flashlight on the enemy for MASSIVE DAMAGE" mechanic and the fact that the enemies are all just dudes were redeemed almost immediately. The enemies are absolutely TERRIFYING. The first boss goes on these tirades, like he's reading from manuals and brochures about Nordic Walking and changing sparkplugs, and it's done in a really unsettling, panic-inducing way. And holy shit, you do panic. When you get bumrushed by six Taken, all wielding axes and sickles, you just want to get away.
