Character Information
Name: Fionna
Source Canon: Adventure Time! That one gender flipped episode.
Age: I’m aging her up to 15…although looking at and hearing her, that’s not much of a stretch. It’s more believable than her being 13, that’s for sure.
Role In Canon: Fionna is essentially the male counterpart of Finn, who is the protagonist of the AT series, so she’s the heroine in the Alternate Universe in the land of Ooo.
History: Fionna is most easily identifiable by her bunny eared hat, blue shirt, green knapsack, skort, knee high socks and Mary Jane shoes.
She was born sometime after the Great Mushroom War, the remnants of which can still be seen strewn across the land of Ooo today. Humanity had gone extinct save for one lost little baby girl in the forest. She was found by two adults cats and grew up alongside her foster sister Cake and given the name Fionna. Fionna remembers virtually nothing about her parents, or really anything about any other humans. As she grew, Cake would be her constant shape-shifting companion, looking out for her and vice versa. The two now live in a tree fort, formerly owned by the vampire king Marshall lee, but cultivated for them and their supply of treasures from all the adventures they get into.
As she got older, it was easy to see that in Ooo, there was someone that needed to keep the peace, or the small peace that they DID have could be disrupted at any time. To this end Fionna trained her body so that she would be able to keep that balance in Ooo. Fionna acts as a moral sheriff wherever she goes, fighting anyone that attempts to cause strife in Ooo with Cake alongside her. The two also tend to get into mischief because even if there isn’t any actual strife, Fionna and Cake are still the adventurous type, willingly to explore the dark places of Ooo, from the land of the dead, Lumpy Space to cursed arenas where the two had to almost battle each other to the death.
This exploring tends to have them meet several different people, from Lumpy Space Prince to the vampire king Marshall Lee. By far Fionna’s favorite, though, is the benevolent ruler of the Candy Kingdom, Prince Gumdrop, and its not surprising that Fionna’s adventures tend to situate around the Candy Kingdom, especially since Cake is dating the Prince’s noble steed, Lord Monochrome. It is also where many troubles seem to come to, as Prince Gumdrop is constantly plagued with attacks on the kingdom, whether self inflicted or from other enemies. The most frequent of these come from the obsessed Ice Queen, a being who wants to make Prince Gumdrop her husband. Her eternal enemy is Fionna, who stops her not only from taking Prince Gumdrop but from taking ANY other prince the Ice Queen imprisons to make her husband.
Personality:
Fionna is a thrill seeking girl traveling all over the place just because its fun, and getting into trouble sometimes due to her curiosity. With Cake by her side, she’s always ready to try something new. Even if there’s a possibility something bad will happen, she’s all about living in the moment. The two of them are inseparable, and look out for each other always.
She can be violent and aggressive with any enemy in her midst, but she is earnest, sweet and kind outside of that. With guys she is more than willing to help them out, and has at times carried Prince Gumball from danger if need be. She holds to the same kind of chivalrous code as her counterpart Finn, and does whatever she needs to protect others.
Unlike Finn though, Fionna seems to be more mature, likely because girls tend to mature faster than boys. She’s insecure about her weight and body, and prefers to make people forget that by acting more tough than necessary. This gives her the usual adage of being a tomboy, something the Ice Queen calls her more than once. It can lead to her being taken advantage of too, as the Ice Queen did once when she fooled Fionna into thinking Prince Gumdrop wanted to date her. After beating the Ice Queen, Fionna proclaims that she doesn’t need to date any guy, that when the right one comes along she’ll know it. Unlike Finn’s crush on Princess Bubblegum, Fionna is able to internalize her crush and concentrate more on helping the land of Ooo. Fionna is more likely to act on her chivalry than she is on her own feelings, if only to make it easier for the Prince.
If you’re a friend of Fionna’s, she’ll do anything to protect you, and if that means getting cut up or injured, she’s ok with that. She has a strong sense of justice, and anyone asking for her help will get it no matter what. If you use her for your own selfish purposes though, she will never trust you again, and will actively seek to ruin your plans to hurt others.
Fionna also pretty much has ADD when the day is done, only in a slightly less manic variety than her male counterpart. When the day is done, so is the adventure, and there will always be a new one waiting for her the next day.
She’s all about swords.
Abilities: Like Finn, Fionna has done a little bit of magic, but is more versed in hand to hand combat and sword fighting. Fionna is able to jump higher than most humans and is very athletic. She possesses great strength, being able to lift Prince Gumball and being able to punch out people much heavier and stronger than her. She usually carries around one of her swords with her, the latest being the root sword she got from Cake once when they had a train murder mystery to solve, and a steel sword that she uses for heavier combat.
Other than this, Fionna likes to play video games, will sing if the moment strikes her, and can sometimes make simple weaponry if given the right tools.
Justification: In canon, Fionna has her own episode, even if it is supposed to be a fanfic by the Ice King. Most people who saw the episode were dissatisfied with all of it being made up, and while I can see two sides of it, I prefer the idea of Fionna existing. You can see a distinct difference between Fionna and Finn: while Finn is fairly unshakable and detaches himself from his feelings at times, Fionna tends to think about things a lot more, and even Cake seems a little different from Jake, somehow less dismissive and more interfering and downright feral when she thought Fionna was in trouble. Having the genders flip definitely brings more questions to light: how would Fionna deal with a women only environment when most of her friends are guys and she herself is a tomboy? What sorts of things would she get into without Cake? How would her need to do the right thing be affected by the kinds of people she meets? If she is more apt to consider her surroundings, what would happen?
