I read that more as that if she could only afford to buy books or clothes, she would choose books. I know I would, and I'm a shameless clothes-horse. And I know that if I had less books, I would have more room for clothes, but that would mean having less books, and that's just not going to happen! Clothes are my comfort and my joy; books are my life.
