More badass with three legs than the rest are with four.

When I last wrote, I had just brought Kit home from Silver Spring. He'd had a bad day last Thursday, and mom's still got a puncture wound in her hand to show for it.

I observed Kit here at home on Friday and Saturday, and noticed his limp getting worse, and the pain seemed to be increasing. He wasn't up for walks unless he really needed to go ( Read more... )

Wow, it sounds like he will be so much happier if this works. I hope he's strong enough to pull through the surgery; I guess the consult will tell? What a trooper!

What convinced me the most was his stubborn-as-hell determination to spend the night sleeping beside our bed, upstairs. To get there, he had to not only climb a flight of stairs - he also had to descend them, with only one usable leg - when it came time to go out. I can't imagine the pain he had to endure to get up and down the steps by himself... but to him, it beat sleeping on the main floor, on his big dog bed.

He's got lots of fight left. He's tough, but more than anything else he wants to BE with us. I'd like to think I've earned the devotion I get from him, but none of us is THAT good :)

The surgery will remove the pain - and it's really the only effective way to do so. So, he'll be without pain. The cancer itself, is another story. That will be an ongoing fight.

For a dog who's probably 13, but for the cancer and two arthritic hips, he's in fantastic shape. Heart, lungs, other internals, all look great. Plus he's determined to make it. He doesn't want for us to be without him.

Give the Kitster some good skritchies behind the ears for me, bro.

He has always been a fighter, I'm hoping and praying he has a few more rounds in him.

I was reminded just Saturday night of the first time he ever saw you. The attending vet is pretty tall - and when she walked into the waiting room where we were with Kit, he barked. Then he looked at me as if to say "uhh, this one's REALLY tall, I hope I don't have to attack..."

He ain't done yet. He's told me as much.

Good luck with Kit's surgery. I don't think I've ever seen a doggie with such a beautifully colored coat. He's a real sweetheart.

*hugs you both*

His recovery - after the first hellish 24 hours - started out strong. We were seeing improvements every 12 hours. He had a very good appetite, was getting around well, swelling was going down...

He's had some setbacks since - his tummy hasn't been well, he's got some digestive issues right now - but he's tough, he wants to get back in shape. He's not giving up. Neither will I.

And yes, he's the most beautiful mutt you'll ever see. Thank you, Shelley! Every bit of support I've gotten from all of my friends, has been a great help. Yours definitely included. :)
