I've been wanting a dog for a few months now pretty casually, and now it's starting to become a very active search. Seeing all the dogs at the dog park, and all the people who go running with their dogs down at Town Lake... I want a running partner! Cats are so dramatic about change, but they get over it. Dogs, especially puppies, go straight for them and want to sniff them and play with them and the cats really dont want anything to do with it. If they seem too stressed out, put them in a separate room and let them sniff each other under the door, and just make sure the cats have a safe get away spot so they feel secure. I'm sure you'll crate train the puppy- while he's locked up during the day the cats will have some time to roam around and play as usual. I never really worried too much about it, it just takes time and patience.

really research any breed you get. For example, i wish i had known nova was part australian cattle dog and would try to herd poor olivia ALL day, every day. She also needs to run for about an hour a day! i figured that all out the hard way. My best advice is to give your pup plenty of exercise daily to keep them from chewing and destroying your house. Congrats on this awesome decision. Please go to the pound or the adoption days that get pound animals!

The best way to get your cats use to the dog is having a safe area for the cats, bedrooms are a great place. That way the cats can test the waters but still feel like they have somewhere to retreat to if necessary. It also gives them a chance to relax if they're not feeling the dog just then; due to the difference in their excitement and energy levels, puppies are going to be far more interested in the cats than carts are in them. Eventually the cats will interact with the dog, but like all cats, it has to be on their terms.

Also, keep their food far apart, and don't be surprised if the dog tries to eat their litter.
