Several years ago when, I was at my last job, there was a young man visiting the office for whatever reason. He'd just recently moved to Philadelphia and mentioned that he'd heard that when it rains everyone in Philly calls out from work. I expressed dismay upon hearing this as I'd been going to work on rainy days all my adult life and now I felt ( Read more... )

I hear you guys are getting it bad out there. I don't know why that's not a California thing, now that I think about it, with how little rain we get, but how miserable everyone is when it finally comes. LOL.

It's not that bad here, not really. I mean, it's cold and rainy but it isn't flooding or anything. Still, it was a good reason not to got to work on a Friday

Hee I think we're the opposite in the UK actually, it's whenever the sun comes out that people just ~happen~ to start calling in sick for a day

The calling out when it rains thing isn't true. The guy who said it just wanted to feel superior to everyone else in the city. I think Philadelphians are more likely to call out when it snows. Just the tiniest bit of snow and they're like "Gotta leave work early before this gets bad"

I do feel the temptation of calling out when the weather gets nice. Like today. Today is too beautiful to waste on work.

Oh we definitely do that too when it snows (I'm actually guilty of that lol, I get really nervous about driving on unsalted roads), the country does seem to grind to a halt whenever we get even a light dusting of snow

In the US the further south you go the more people get freaked out by snow. My mom's from Boston (about 8 hours north of Philadelphia) and she always complained that people here would panic when they drove in snow. Further south it's even worse.

You must have been very ready for a day off after such a long work stretch!

Yeah. I'm taking it easy now. Not working 10 hour days seven days a week is really nice.
