Two steps forward, one back

Both cats slept in my lap today, peacefully and after having licked each other in the face and side. It was very nice to see them sleep next to each other, relaxed and peaceful. Chloe has also stopped growling and hissing at Dotty ( Read more... )

Wow, what a Cat Soap Opera. I agree that you can't have one cat biting the other in earnest. Cats do tussle and play-bite to get their energy out, and even cats who get along will have it out every so often, but there's rarely any deadly serious biting and scratching going on. If Chloe is trying to hurt Dotty, then she might have to be in a home where she is the only cat.

Maybe you should be the new Cat Whisperer?

Other people have mentioned that even cats that go well together will tussle from time to time. it's good to know. Maybe it looks more dramatic than it is, I hope so.

At the moment I'm not sure how hurtful or not Chloe's bites are, since she doesn't manage to get close to Dotty. But Dotty's swipes at Chloe are not very aggressive, there's no claws out. She just jumps Chloe for fun but Chloe doesn't want to play. Have to see how it develops.

Sounds like you've got your hands full! My boys fight all the time... About the only time I ever break it up is when one is trying to get way because he's no longer interested in fighting, and the other one just wont let up. And the only reason I do that is because in the process of trying to get away from each other, they tend to jump up on shelves and knock over stuff. I don't think they're fighting is real "fighting" per se tho... Even tho they do occasionally draw blood and whatnot, I don't think there is any real anger involved. A lot of times they will stop in mid-fight and clean each other, and then go back to roughhousing. But they were both neutered fairly young and they've been around each other since they were quite small. So I think their aggression towards each other is of the kittenish variety.

Have you thought about investing in a squirt bottle?

Nice, if they can playfight, wash each other, and then go back to fighting, they trust each other, like two kittens. :)

Good to hear cats can fight, even if they are friends.

I might try a squirt bottle later on. So far getting between the cats helps.
