So tomorrow I have to send in my dissertations. I thought that I would be really nervous right now (since I am a regular jitterbug about tests and crap) but I feel kind of okay
( Read more... )
It sounds a bit like you're a tool. No offense. :P I'd have to read it in context with the paper to really know. Hopefully you're prof doesn't watch LOST. ;)
Have you ever heard of that experiment where it showed average people would be willing to kill someone if an authority figure said it was okay?
My paper is mainly about the U.N. Convention on Torture and how America kinda dodges its obligations under it by redefining the meaning of torture. By UN and most Western standers torture is an act by which pain and suffering is inflicted be it mentally or physically. America has added the extra condition that something is only torture if the act is so severe that it leads to the failure of organs or other bodily functions. They also use an interpretation that says that the treaty only has effect on American soil. So they can torture all they like in the CIA facilities on foreign countries.
I forgot the name of the experiment, but it's the one with the shocks of electricity right?
It's also a Dutch to English translation and Dutch words have completely different connotations to them even though they mean the same thing. I come in contact with a lot of people who translate their Dutch directly to English and it always sounds so off, but so right if you hear it in Dutch.
Ah, I love the CIA. I think I will apply for a job there. :P
I also forgot the name, but yea it's with shocks of electricity (except they were fake). I think it could be applied to look at the psychology of torture (and probably has) and question whether or not authorizing someone to commit the acts of torture is torture itself. Of course, if one doesn't believe it's torture then they probably won't have many qualms about it.
