Logan called Trina to fill her in on the situation. She immediately agreed to meet them at the hospital to have the testing process started.
They were getting ready to walk out the door when Duncan’s cell phone rang.
“Hello?”
“Duncan, you need to find Veronica and meet me at the hospital!” Wallace was practically yelling into the phone. Duncan could hear Claire screaming in the background.
“What’s wrong?” Duncan shouted. Veronica and Logan looked at him. His face registering the seriousness of the situation.
“I think Claire’s arm is broken. She fell on the playground…Oh God.” Wallace was falling apart.
“Calm down Wallace, just get her to the hospital.” Duncan looked at Veronica. She looked terrified when she heard the word ‘hospital.’
“OK, I’m so sorry,” Wallace said through tears.
“It’s not your fault Wallace. Tell Claire that we’re coming and to be a big girl.” Duncan’s eyes were filling up as he pulled Veronica toward the car quickly. Logan was hot on their heels. He needed to know what was wrong with his child.
“What’s wrong?” Veronica’s voice quivered as Duncan stuffed his cell phone in his pocket and helped her into the car.
“Claire’s been hurt,” he tried to remain calm. “She fell on the playground. Wallace thinks that her arm is broken.”
“Oh God,” Veronica buried her face in her hands, trying to keep a clear head. She couldn’t let herself fall apart or Claire would really be scared.
“Is she OK?” Logan asked Duncan.
“I don’t know I could hear her screaming.” Duncan choked on the last word.
Duncan broke every speed limit getting to the hospital. Running into the ER, they approached a nurse. She pointed down the hall saying that Claire was in the last room on the right.
They were doing a fast walk down the hall when they heard Claire screaming.
“Daddy…I want my daddy!”
Duncan broke into a fast sprint down the hall. He bumped into a nurse and almost knocked her down. He did not stop. He had to get to Claire.
Veronica and Logan entered the room a few paces behind Duncan. He had already scooped Claire up into his arms and was soothing her.
“I’m scared daddy. It hurts!” Claire cried into Duncan’s chest as he sat down on the bed, cradling her in his arms.
“I know it does sweetie. Daddy won’t leave you. I’ll stay right here. You can squeeze my hand just like we do when it’s time for the needles.” Duncan’s voice was so smooth and calm. Claire relaxed visibly as he stroked her hair.
Veronica rushed over and began kissing all over her daughter’s face.
“I love you Claire. You’re such a brave girl. Mommy is so proud of you.” Veronica wiped Claire’s tears gently with her hands.
Logan felt sick about the whole scene. His child was crying because of the pain she was in and there was nothing he could do. She called Duncan ‘daddy’. He felt like a stranger here. He had to hold onto the door for support because his knees were so weak. He couldn’t get a good look at Claire. She was huddled against Duncan’s chest and Veronica was soothing her.
Wallace looked over and saw Logan in the doorway.
“What’s he doing here?” Furrowing his brow, he glared at Logan.
“Shhh,” Veronica warned and looked down at Claire.
Wallace set his jaw, but continued to give Logan dirty looks.
Logan could care less about what Wallace thought. He was dealing with too many emotions right now. His world was turned on it’s axis in one day.
He didn’t know how to make things right with Veronica and Claire but he wasn’t going to give up. Logan was determined that he would never walk away again. He had to find a way to be in Claire’s life and he wanted his Veronica back. His love for her was as strong as ever.
A nurse walked in and looked around. “Only mom and dad need to be in here,” she said.
Logan crossed his arms. It was clear to Veronica that he had to get out of that room. She feared that he was going to blurt out something Claire didn’t need to hear.
“Wallace, could you take him to the lab?” She nodded toward Logan.
“I’m not leaving.” Logan muttered softly.
Veronica walked over and pushed him into the hall gently. She hated how broken he looked. However, her concern was her child, and not Logan’s feelings.
“I’m her daddy.” Logan whispered angrily.
She looked into his eyes. “Be reasonable Logan. Please go get the blood work done before the lab closes for the day.”
Logan bit his lip but nodded. He closed his eyes in defeat. He opened them and looked at her again. “That’s MY child in there. I’m her daddy.”
“I can’t do this right now Logan!” Tears falliing from her eyes.
Logan pulled her into his arms. “Shhh, I’m sorry,” he whispered. “Please don’t cry. I’ll go. I’m coming back as soon as I’m finished. You need to let the nurse know that.” He said as he pulled back from her.
She nodded and she wiped her eyes.
They walked back into the room to get Wallace. Logan watched Duncan holding Claire. It was obvious how much he loved her. Logan was determined that Claire was going to feel as close to him one day, no matter what.
Claire looked up at Duncan suddenly. Logan was finally able to see her face. His breath caught in his throat. She was a perfect mixture of him and Veronica.
“The nurse says I can get any color in the rainbow and then some.” Claire said as she sniffed a little. She stopped crying and was very relaxed in Duncan’s arms. He rocked her back and forth and kissed her forehead.
“Wow, any color huh?” Duncan smiled lovingly at Claire and she nodded quickly.
“So what’s it going to be Miss?”
“Like you don’t already know?” Veronica winked at Duncan.
“I want light blue, just like your eyes daddy.” Claire grinned.
“Told you,” Veronica smirked. Suddenly she realized that Logan was still standing there. “Sorry,” she whispered. Logan nodded but the pained look in his eyes spoke volumes.
“We should go.” Wallace muttered as he walked up to Logan.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Logan and Trina gave blood samples at the lab. Trina left for home as soon as they were finished.
Logan and Wallace walked back toward the ER. Wallace looked ready to explode at any moment.
“Just get it over with.” Logan sighed and came to a stop.
“You don’t belong here.” Wallace said quickly.
Logan pointed to the ER doors. “That’s MY child in there. Don’t tell me where I belong.” He snapped bitterly.
“That’s Duncan’s child now. You lost all rights to her. You never called or checked on them, not once.” Wallace was pacing. He was trying to stifle the urge to grab Logan by the throat and choke him.
“I never received the letters, my fia….Jacqueline stole them. Veronica knows all about this. I didn’t know about Claire.”
“Oh fuck you Logan. You think it’s that easy? ‘I didn’t know.’ Give me a fucking break. You should have never left in the first place. It almost killed her.” Wallace shouted.
Logan looked down guiltily. “I know that,” he whispered.
Wallace threw up his hands in frustration. “She loved you. She made so many excuses for you. It made me sick to hear them. She was always checking her cell phone and the mail. She thought that you would change your mind. I hate you Logan,” he hissed. “You need to go back to wherever the hell you were, because THEY are a family and there‘s no place for you here.”
Logan looked up quickly and narrowed his eyes at Wallace.
“Veronica and Claire belong with me.”
“And what about the man who Claire calls ‘daddy?’ What about him Logan? He’s been here the WHOLE time. He gave up going to Harvard to stay here with Veronica. He was holding her hand when Claire was born and has been there everyday since. All the birthdays and Christmases, he was there. He taught her to ride a bike and he coached her soccer team every year. HE is her daddy, not you.”
“Duncan knew that I was in Paris. He should have called me.” Logan snapped.
Wallace glared at Logan. “He just found out where you were. Veronica wouldn’t tell him. She was afraid that he’d go beat the shit out of you. He tracked you down a month ago. He wanted you to sign over your parental rights to him. He plans to adopt Claire when he and Veronica get married next month.”
“What?” Logan gasped with a look of horror on his face.
“You didn’t know?” Wallace asked. He seemed pleased that he had been able to deliver the painful blow.
“No,” Logan whispered. He sank down in a nearby chair and buried his face in his hands.
“What does it matter to you Logan? You’re engaged or married or whatever. You have someone else now.”
Logan looked up quickly. “I won’t sign over my rights, no way.” He shook his head adamantly.
“Claire doesn’t even know you Logan.”
“What has she been told?” Logan asked sadly.
“You should ask Veronica.”
“I’m asking you.” Logan said angrily.
Wallace sighed and sat down across from Logan. “Veronica told Claire that her daddy had to go away because of his job but he loved her.”
“Great,” Logan said sarcastically.
“Fuck off Logan!” Wallace jumped up again. “After she told Claire that….Duncan had to quit going out of town on business. Claire was worried that he would leave and never come home.”
“I wish she would have told her something different.”
Wallace rolled his eyes. “Yeah, she should have told her what I suggested. She should have said that you died.”
“Gee thanks,” Logan growled.
“What was she supposed to say? ‘Listen Claire, your daddy was a coward and couldn’t face all the press. He left us to go fuck other women and have a good time with his millions.’ Would that suit you Logan?”
“Does Claire know what I look like?” Logan wasn’t going to let Wallace goad him into a fight.
“Yes, she has a picture of you beside her bed.” Wallace mumbled.
“She does?” It was the first promising thing Logan had heard.
“Yes,” Wallace said bitterly as he walked away.
Logan closed his eyes and sighed.
‘Time to go see Claire,’ he thought as he stood up and walked through the ER doors.
