Hey sweetie - I sat down and watched the Bill O'Rilley vid you linked and I think as much as we may hate his opinion, it is one that was shared by many people out there at the time. I think the problem people have in reconciling this case (at least initially) is that this was a teenage boy, one who had opportunities and we just DON'T GET how something like that life can be made to seem the only alternative. Shawn wasn't a "kid" like Stephen was, and people can't understand a teenager not running. Fear and resignation can make things seem hopeless. And you are highlighting this so well in this fic.

The thing that struck me more than anything in the O'Rilley vid is the way the opinion changed when the facts came out. Whether it was a legit change or not, I don't know, but I hope so. It just sucks that it takes reading graphic reports to believe that the situation was so dire that Shawn felt he had no choice

This is maybe going to sound like I'm ranting at you a little, but I promise I'm not, because you are awesome and kickass and I agree completely with everything you said. You just got me thinking, and suddenly I'm more angry at O'Reily than I was before haha. This is all at Bill, I swear :)

I definitely agree with you that what he thought was definitely thought by a lot of people, which is likely why he said it. He's one of those personalities whose fans like him because he "tells it like it is" but all that means in this case is that he says what an uneducated public thinks is legitmate because they don't know better, and he's a journalist so he should know better. He has a responsiblity to research what he talks about and present people with facts, not to run into a story with a lot of unsubstantiated opinions ( ... )

I suppose you're right in not classifying him as a journalist. I know he studied journalism at one point, but it doesn't sit well with me at all to put him in the same category as people whose reporting and political commentary I respect (whether I agree with it or not). Sticking him with the Jerry Springers and Glen Becks feels much more fitting ( ... )

Wow! Can't believe how mean people can be sometimes! He was a little kid when he was taken, it wasn't his fault!

Thanks for commenting! It's always amazing to me how heartless people can be in real life when something like this has happened, especially the media. For people who the responsibility to find the real story sometimes they're very bad at it :(

These news readers can say what they want... They can say things like when your a kid u don't no what to do but when your older u do .... The bottom line is you will never know how what went down unless your in the situation ... In Stevens case he did what to survive he knew after a while it was wrong but at the time he was sort If brainwashed ... But once this guy kidnapped another kid he had to do somthing now or never ... I do hate news reader when they blame the victims.... It is sad there are so many case out there some are found some murdered... It's heartbreaking ... I really love this fic i no it heartbreaking but somehow If people read these true story's or watch it wil being awares to people and kids out there to be careful..

Victim blaming is such a disgusting problem in today's society. It's so upsetting to me to see how the news and especially talk shows/opinion-based shows use rating as an excuse to spew horrible and poorly-thought out things that hurt people who have already been hurt enough. It hurts even more to know that uninformed people listen to those shows and are easily convinced to agree. And you are right, better awareness and education on these issues would be a very good thing :)

ahaha I'm answering these so unbelievably out of order. Oh well, it is what it is.

Thanks so much for your comments (I seriously was so freaking excited to read them you don't even know), and it really means a lot that it doesn't feel like a story that's just there for shock value. And that Blaine comes across as trying to hold on to who he is without having to be either a victim or a hero. And that you like that I spend SO MUCH TIME on aftermath. Okay, so basically, I really love that you appreciate all the parts of the story I really wanted to not mess up on. It's a very good feeling hahaha.
