And of course it's Picard they meet, not Archer or Kirk, who would at least have something in common with Mal, or Sisko, who might understand where they're coming from, or Janeway on her one ship, alone.

TNG was definitely a more candy-coated era for Trek, and Firefly is-- not that at all. Once they got past the surface they'd find lots in common, I think, but that first impression would be a real doozy to overcome.
