QUERY!

why is it national news every time american idol dismisses another contestant? i'm not saying "national news" as an exaggeration here. why does cnn.com run a headline story every week when the new castoff is announced?

That's because more people vote for their next American Idol then they do for their next president.

I mean, the same question could be extended to: why is Tom Cruise-azy bigger news then Mouassoui? Why is Kaavya Viswanathan a bigger scandal then, oh, potential world annihiliation at the hands of Iran?

The fluffy stuff is easier to digest, I think. And I'm just as guilty of it. (But I don't watch that stupid American Idol.)

yeah, i'm definitely used to fluff, and i most certainly read male-oriented fluff myself (sports). furthermore, i'm used to big-name shows getting headlines when something truly noteworthy happens in the show. i would expect there to be a story about the final few, or the winner, of 'idol,' but the thing that amazes me is that it gets coverage every single week throughout the entire run of the show - from the tryouts through every elimination - cnn.com chronicles every single development no matter how large or small - it's as though they've given the show its own section!

I find it entertaining that America bonds over the selection of their American Idol yet no one buys their records (with the exception of Kelly Clarkson).

Because news organizations are desperately trying to stay hip and with it and find out things that young readers/watchers like and they think AI is it. Especially because more people vote for AI than they do for the president...sad.

the fact that you called it AI is distrubing.

I always enjoy flipping between the tabs on cnn.com for "top stories" and "most popular stories" and watching it change from "So-and-so resigns from administration in disgrace" and "Rogue nations filled with poverty, anger" to "Is American Idol racist?" and "Is your nail polish killing your unborn child?"
