Finlay's First Story

just so i remember what happened tonight at bedtime...

Finlay: Why do you tell me stories?

Mama: Because I love you.

Finlay: And Daddy tells me stories. [pause] Why does Daddy tell me stories?

Mama: Because he loves you.

Finlay: I'm gonna tell you a story.

Mama: Okay.

Finlay: Once upon a time... [laughter] ... there was a goose named Finlay

Awww. What a day for firsts in your home. Miriam pulled to standing for the first time today here-that was exciting. Until she refused to go to bed because she wanted to keep doing it.

Nice! It's really amazing to watch how they develop. And how they reach all their milestones differently. Do you find that Miriam and Naomi are on different timelines for different skills and interests? I thought I knew that Jasper would be different from Finlay, but I find that I am always surprised by just how differently he reaches all those milestones.

Miriam rolled over later than Naomi and still doesn't consistently roll back to belly-she's got torticollis-a shortening of neck muscles on one side and the physical therapist seems to think this is why she doesn't roll that way, especially since there are no other gross motor delays (which is pleasantly surprising.) Since she started rolling though she sat up and crawled about two weeks earlier than Naomi did. I went back to see when Naomi pulled to standing and she didn't do it until about nine months-which is why I was very surprised when Miriam did it tonight.

I really try and respect that each of them has their own timeline for things. But it's hard not to compare the two, for sure.

They do have the ability to enchant, don't they? I've watched a number of people sit utterly hypnotized by one of Rosebud's stories.

Isaac won't tell a story. He'll just be like "I don't know any stories."
