“Hey, why don’t we stop here for the night?” The grey bearded pot bellied old man gestures animatedly at the sign post. “To have a good night indoors in a proper bed for a change?”
“Oh yeah? You and what money? We haven’t got any to spare.”
“We could always perform again. Have I ever told you that when I was younger, I dreamt of being a travelling musician?”
“NO. THAT was embarrassing. I didn’t know whether to disembowel myself, murder the guy who was making you dance or kill you instead.” Muttering darkly, Zuko turns away, fighting down the bitter taste of shame that surges forth at the memory.
As if responding to the boy’s mood, the torches by the town’s gate flare up, highlighting the hollows that have sprung up beneath his cheekbones. Months of living like a fugitive have not been kind to the former prince.
Iroh notes the gauntness in the boy’s face, the hungry eyes, the all too loose ragged clothes and tsks inwardly. At least, he still has some reserves. Oh well, time to remedy that. With that, he sighs and reaches into his sleeve pulling out a thin pouch of coin.
“We have enough for a hot meal and a bed. Is it not said that a good night’s rest is the best balm for a soul?”
Zuko would have objected but his stomach had to choose that moment to voice its less honourable intentions.
“Oh alright. Have it your way”
