It was a beautiful Friday afternoon in San Francisco. It was just begging everyone to be happy and to have a good time. Keri however, was not having a good time. At all. By any stretch of the imagination. And she was most certainly not happy.
She was sitting at her dorm room desk, running fingers through her blonde hair in irritation. It was amazing that she was only running fingers through her hair when she was so stressed she could just pull her hair out.
Her week had started out as total shit; she woke up late for her first class. Why she signed up for morning classes, she can’t quite remember. Oh yeah, it was so she could do all her work in the afternoon and then hang out with her friends. Once she got to class she realized she had left her books for her classes in her dorm and she had no idea what the hell her professor was saying. Of course, it just had to get worse; her professor assigned her class a paper on Plato and Aristotle, their arguments on being, how the arguments differed, and which one they agreed with. Damn you Plato! But of course, Keri, being the good student she was, went back to her dorm after her day of classes, and worked diligently on her paper. Thank god for all that K-Pop fan fiction she wrote; it had prepared her for all the writing in college. And to think, some of her high school friends scoffed at her hobby. HA-HA!
Tuesday wasn’t looking any better. She didn’t have any classes but she had to work. Let’s just say her boss is an asshole and leave it at that. >_> Keri just couldn’t take his bullshit any more so she quit. So now she was an out of state college student, who had no job. Fantastic. (Please note the sarcasm)
Wednesday and Thursday just sucked. Keri and her boyfriend Andrew (I’m so uncreative) were getting into a lot of fights this past month and it was starting to get worse. He was just being an ass. Apparently Keri wasn’t making enough time for him in her life when, really, Keri was just super busy with school and trying to find a job. She was so stressed!
Today it all just blew up in her face. Andrew dumped her, she was totally brain dead in her classes, and she still hadn’t found a job. Today sucked and she’d be damned if she was going to let a little bit of good weather change her mind. Was it too much to ask to just have a day to wallow in misery? Apparently so…
“Keri get off of your ass, we’re going out to lunch!” There was no mistaking the command in Erin’s words. Keri turned to look at her roommate who was currently standing with her hands on her hips, all attitude and demands. Keri winced a bit and laid her head down on her desk. This caused the brunette at the door to sigh in frustration. “Oh no you don’t!” Erin said as she stomped over to their shared closet and pulled out a jacket and flung it at Keri. “We’re getting out of this dorm, NOW! Stephanie is meeting us at the restaurant.”
Keri gave a huff of frustration before forcing herself to stand up and pull on the jacket. “Fine.” She said with venom practically dripping off of that one word.
Erin, however, was unaffected by the malice. She merely gave a victorious smile and all but pushed Keri out of the door. “I promise you’ll like it!”
Ok, so the restaurant wasn’t that bad but Keri wasn’t about to tell Erin that. They had just gotten there to find Stephanie already waiting for them at a table. When Stephanie saw them she waved them over to the table. “That didn’t take nearly as long as I was guessing it would.” Erin laughed at this while Keri glared at Stephanie. Stephanie put her hands in front of her in a wordless expression of, ‘Hey don’t kill me, it’s true and you know it.’
Keri watched as Erin and Stephanie drifted into conversation. She really didn’t feel like talking. She felt like sleeping, for like a bazillion hours. Keri continued to wallow, and that’s when she saw him.
Sure she dated Andrew, but Keri usually went for Asian guys, as did most of her college friends. Weird. But, back onto the matter at hand; He was possibly the most attractive guy Keri had seen in her life. He was tall, tan, and had dark brown hair. Perfect, just her type AND she was now single. Keri’s day was getting better already.
“Ummm, Keri? You’re drooling. It’s kind of icky.” Erin’s words (and poking of her side) brought Keri back down to earth.
“Oh, my bad.” Keri tried to regain her dignity, well as much as she could. She sat up straight and tried to make an effort to join the conversation, though it was hard ‘cause she had been zoning out for the past couple of minutes.
Stephanie began waving at someone behind Keri, but Keri was way to lazy to check and see who it was. Maybe Erin forgot to mention that someone else was coming. It wouldn’t surprise her, Erin was kind of ADHD like that. How she and Changmin got together, Keri will never know. She just doesn’t question it. “Hey Kyu.” Keri turned around at Stephanie’s words. Keri most certainly did not know anyone who went by the name ‘Kyu’.
Oh shit, was the first thought that ran through Keri’s head. It was the hot guy she was checking out earlier. From this close she could tell that he had deep chocolate brown eyes, juuuuuuuuuuust her type. Keri quickly turned back around as the guy began to talk. “Hey Steph.” Anyone could hear the smile in his soothing voice. Wait, Stephanie was on shortened named terms with this hot guy? When did this happen? Does Yehsung know about this?
“Rin. Keri. This is Kyuhyun. He’s one of Yehsung’s friends.” Ohhhh, I guess Yehsung does know. How come Keri was never informed that Stephanie’s boyfriend had hot friends. She would’ve really liked to have known that little piece of information before she had dated (and gotten dumped by) Andrew. If this Kyuhyun person was friends with Yehsung, he had to be nice.
Erin smiled and reached across the table to shake Kyuhyun’s hand. “It’s nice to meet you. I’m Erin, people call me Rin though.”
“It’s nice to meet you. You’re Changmin’s girlfriend right?” Wait, how did all of her friends’ boyfriends know this hot guy and yet Keri had remained uninformed?
Keri laughed a little at Erin’s blissful expression. “Yes I am. ^_^” Erin’s love for Changmin was… well… fan girl like. It was almost as if Changmin was some K-pop idol and Erin was his number one fan. Only not in that creepy #1 fan way like that girl in Epik High’s ‘Fan’ music video. Keri shuddered a little; that girl creeped her out and then some. Though, for the most part, Erin was very down to earth about her relationship with Changmin, so Keri guessed that Erin was allowed her fan girl moments.
“Ok. I thought so. He talks about you a lot.” Kyuhyun was clearly just as amused by Erin’s reaction as Stephanie and Keri were. “So then you must be Keri.”
Oh, was he speaking to her? Keri turned around in her chair to face Kyuhyun. Which she almost regretted because as soon as she did her words got caught in her throat. “Y-yes, I’m Keri. Umm, Nice to meet you.” Smooth Keri, real smooth. She wanted to smack herself on the head, but held back that urge in the interest of appearing sane.
Kyuhyun held out his hand and smiled. “Nice to meet you too.” Once Keri grasped his hand in hers she thought she might die of embarrassment. She wasn’t sure why, but she still felt that way. She got to (kinda, but not really) hold hands with a really hot guy who was exactly her type. Andrew? Andrew who? It’s all about Kyuhyun!
It was with great reluctance that Keri let go of Kyuhyun’s hand. “So, do you know what you want to order yet?” Keri knew what she wanted, but she didn’t think he was on the menu.
Through out the course of lunch, Keri found herself feeling much better. Not that she would tell Erin this. She was sure it had more to do with Kyuhyun anyways. It was actually really nice to have a hot guy serve you. Really, really nice. Keri reveled in it. You can imagine that she was greatly saddened when Kyuhyun brought out their bill.
Stephanie and Erin took out their wallets. Keri started to reach for hers but Stephanie stopped her. “No. This is mine and Erin’s ‘have a better day ‘cause Andrew’s an asshole’ treat to you. You’re not paying.” Andrew? Andrew who? Oh wait, that asshole who dumped her. Keri was actually quite pleased with his timing though. After all, if Andrew hadn’t dumped her then Erin and Stephanie wouldn’t have taken her to lunch and then Keri would’ve never met Kyuhyun. Maybe she would’ve but she wouldn’t have met him today. She would’ve met him later and Keri was so very glad that she met him today. “Hey Kyu, didn’t you say that the manager wanted to hire another server?” Stephanie said this, and if Keri hadn’t known better, she would’ve said that Stephanie had an almost evil glint in her eyes. It must be Keri’s imagination.
“Yes!” Kyuhyun said with a desperate edge in his voice. “I’ve had to work so much overtime since Yehsung found another job. Why? Do you know someone who needs a job?”
Erin decided to jump in now. “Actually, Keri here, needs a job. Yah don’t think you could work something out do yah?”
“I’ll go get the manager now.”
Once again, Keri was SO glad that Andrew dumped her today.
A week had passed since then and Keri was loving her new job. (and her new coworker ^.~) The restaurant it self wasn’t anything special looks wise but it had a nice feel to it, and everyone who worked there was really nice.
Keri had made friends with one of the chefs, Sungmin. It was really easy because they were a lot a like. He was bubbly and energetic, just like Keri. The other chef, Hankyung, was really nice too. Keri never would’ve guessed that both of them were black belts. Then again, she never would’ve guessed that Erin was a black belt either. She wasn’t surprised that Soojin was though. Man Soojin and her soon too be (once they admit the like each other) boyfriend Kangin were both so strong. Keri’s so glad she’s on their good side. Back to the subject, Keri was relieved that everyone she worked with was so nice. Especially a certain dark haired, brown eyed waiter.
The more Keri got to know Kyuhyun, the more she liked him. She learned that He actually went to the same college she did, San Francisco State University. Once again, how had she not been aware of this? Keri actually let that slip out when they were walking home from work one day. Kyuhyun laughed in response. “It’s probably because I’m a music major so I’m not taking a lot of the classes you are.”
“Really?” Keri knew that some people loved music enough to pursue it as a career but she had never met one of them. She tried to keep her pace slow, this place wasn’t nearly far enough from her house to make this walk as long as she would like it to be.
“Really.” Kyuhyun smiled at her again. “I’m Majoring in music, with a concentration in composing.”
“Are you any good?” Keri was sure that he was, but wanted to tease Kyuhyun anyways. She was not expecting what happened next.
Kyuhyun reached out a brushed a hair away from Keri’s face and tucked it behind her ear. “Well, I could always write you something and you can make up your own mind.” He said this quietly and Keri shivered with delight. Keri would’ve gone along with anything he suggested as long as he suggested it in that tone of voice. He must be a singer too. Keri was positive that no one could have that tone of voice and not be a singer. It was mellow, soothing, and just amazing like Kyuhyun.
Keri wanted to say, ‘YES PLEASE!!!’, but decided that that would sound a little desperate so instead she settled for, “Ok, I’d like that.”
She may have just been imagining it, but she could’ve sworn Kyuhyun looked a little happier when she said that.
The rest of the walk back to the dorms was spent in a comfortable silence.
It wasn’t unusual to have people she knew come to the restaurant. In fact, Keri would be surprised if a day would ever go by that she didn’t’ see some one she knew it the restaurant. Erin came frequently. Keri was sure it was just to tease her about Kyuhyun.
Erin had ambushed her one night after Keri came home from work and had demanded to know why she looked ‘so damn giddy.’ You can’t really avoid her when you live with her.
Stephanie came a lot to. As did Yehsung, Changmin, Sammy, Zaku, Soojin, and Kangin. It was never the same group of people; though their teasing Keri about Kyuhyun was always present. At least things never got boring. She had also met some more of Kyuhyun’s friends. Keri really hoped that Sammy and Zaku would never meet Hyukjae and Donghae. Keri shuddered at the thought of all the havoc they would reek.
Teasing friends aside, Keri was really enjoying her job. Her bubbly personality made her a fantastic waitress which by default meant lots of tips. Of course, having to be around Kyuhyun every day had a lot to do with Keri’s good mood. I mean really, she was getting paid to do something that she was good at AND she got to be around the guy she liked at the same time. Life was good for Keri.
One day, however, Kyuhyun didn’t come in to work. Not only was Kyuhyun not there, some girl was there instead. … Keri was slightly put off by this but she tried not to panic. Maybe Kyuhyun was just sick today or something, there’s no reason to jump to conclusions.
“Hi, I’m Keri. It’s nice to meet you.” Keri let her cheerfulness take over when talking to this unknown girl.
She was a tiny Asian girl and Keri would have called her adorable but there was an edge about her that made Keri stop. “I’m Anh. It’s nice to meet you too.”
Keri was about to ask Anh some more questions but at that moment their manager came up, “Keri, this is the girl taking Kyuhyun’s place. I need you to show her around the place.” Keri shook her head in acknowledge meant.
Kyuhyun’s replacement? Had Kyuhyun quit? Was he fired? What the hell was going on? Kyuhyun never mentioned anything to Keri about this. She had seen him just yesterday at work, why is there this girl replacing him today?
Keri tried not to dwell too much on it as she went through her day. At the end of her shift she decided to get to the bottom of this. She was going to talk to Sungmin. Sungmin always knew everything. He was a bit of a gossip whore.
“Why is Kyuhyun being replaced?”
Sungmin looked up at her, shock apparent on his face. “He quit yesterday. His parents decided that Kyuhyun had earned the right to be a music major so they’re paying now. He doesn’t need to work.” Parents paying? He quit yesterday?
“Oh”
“He didn’t tell you?”
“No.”
She walked to the dorms alone that night. Keri hadn’t done that since she started working at the restaurant. Kyuhyun had always walked with her. It’s funny; Keri used to think that the walk home was to short now the walk seems to drag on forever.
How could he not tell her? Over the month and a half she had been working with Kyuhyun, they had grown close. Apparently Keri was the only one who thought so. She was just getting her hopes up.
She was still in a foul mood when she walked into her dorm room. She didn’t even look at Erin’s side of the room. She knew better then that. Once she did Erin would start the interrogation.
‘What’s wrong?’
‘Do I need to beat the shit out of someone? ‘Cause if you need me to, I can totally do that.’
“Keri.”
“Rin, not now!” Keri decided to just cut off the interrogation before it even started. She really just didn’t want to hear it tonight. For once she just wanted to wallow and be left alone. She didn’t want Erin, Stephanie, Soojin, or ANYBODY trying to cheer her up right now.
“But there’s some-“
“For once can you just leave me alone when I want to wallow?!” Keri shouted this without turning around. She thought she heard the sound of the door opening and shutting, but it was so quiet that she might have just imagined it.
Seconds later she felt Erin put her hand on her shoulder. Now she was just annoyed. “Why can’t you just listen to me and leave me al-“ Keri stopped mid yell when she turned around and instead of seeing Erin behind her, she saw Kyuhyun. “Oh.”
Great. Now she just felt stupid. She really did not want to see him right now. “So… you quit.”
“Yeah.” It made it all the more real when she heard it from Kyuhyun. She can’t believe he didn’t tell her. She wanted to be mad a him, really, she did. She just couldn’t. “Look Keri, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you. I should’ve, I guess I just didn’t think about it.”
Ouch. He just didn’t think about telling Keri that he wouldn’t be at work the next day ‘cause he was quitting. Glad to know he was thinking of her. Not.
Kyuhyun seemed to realize how that sounded and he rushed to fix that error. “I didn’t mean it like that!” Keri looked up at Kyuhyun’s blushing face. “It’s just, I thought I’d be seeing you anyways so it didn’t really matter if I quit.” Keri couldn’t quite keep the small smile off of her face at Kyuhyun’s words.
She bit her lip nervously. “You want to see me outside of work?” Kyuhyun nodded in response. Keri didn’t know what to say to that so she resorted to one of their constant jokes. “It’s ‘cause you’re secretly in love with me, right?”
“Actually, yes, I am. Is that ok?”
Keri just nodded, dumbstruck in response. “Yeah, it’s really ok.” Kyuhyun smiled and leaned down to press a light kiss on to Keri’s lips and perhaps had she been paying closer attention she might have noticed the sounds of a victory celebration going on outside their dorm. But then again, Keri couldn’t say she really cared much about what was going on outside there dorm, ‘cause all that mattered was that Kyuhyun was in her dorm, telling her he loved her, and kissing her.
Life was good and it wasn’t because of the fucking good weather either.
