I don't think that all the couples that partake in Valentines Day don't do much for each other. Regardless of the corporate holiday it's turned into for sales, there is still a romantic feel to it. It wasn't all about buying chocolate, cards, etc. It used to have more behind it in terms of love and romance. It hit big during the Renaissance with the advent of courtly love.
I like celebrating it--and not because I feel guilty or because I don't do much or anything for my significant other--but because I find it fun and romantic.
I get surprised with gifts on other days. I normally don't get gifts on Valentines Day aside from a lone flower.
But I doubt I'll be doing anything. I'm sure I'll end up working. He hasn't stated that he wants to do anything for Valentines Day so I'm not going to request off. Besides, getting dinner reservations on V Day is shitty. Waiting times are outrageous.
I'm not saying everyone celebrates it out of guilt. I just think it's kinda dumb to dedicate a day to it, where a lot of people do celebrate it out of guilt.
My job is a good example. We sell flowers and other nice stuff. On most days, I never see it sell. Buuuut on Valnetine's, I will see people buying the flowers last minute, and whatever chocolate we have left. Granted, people don't come to our store to buy nice, romantic stuff but if they are coming in to buy stuff, you know it's last minute for the most part and hence, not really important to them.
Maybe if it wasn't so commercialized, I wouldn't mind it so much.
For me, Christmas is more about hanging out with the family then giving presents/receiving them. I always tell my family "I really don't want anything so don't worry too much about it." I do buy presents for people close to me though because I feel like I'm a dick if I don't. So yeah, I get guilted into it somewhat. But it's nice to see their reaction, especially my nieces. I definitely think present-wise, it's a holiday for kids, haha. For me, it's just to be with my family, as we don't really get a chance to see each other in one spot nowadays.
