Ryan stretches out further on the couch, arching his back as he goes. His muscles ache in a way he’s missed, the good kind of ache where you know you worked hard enough but not enough to feel it when you wake up tomorrow.
Summer training was always an exercise in balance, trying to add as much muscle as possible before the season starts and all of it practically disintegrates, while trying to not over do it. Too many preseason and early injuries are caused by overdoing summer training.
As Ryan stretches out, he accidentally kicks Charlie, whose head lulled back against the couch cushion. Charlie shoots his hand out to grip Ryan’s calf and puts it into a vice grip until Ryan is kicking out, trying to squirm out of it.
“Psycho,” Ryan mutters as he rubs as the bright red fingerprints left behind.
“You kicked me in the head!” Charlie argues back indignantly.
“Your head was in the way of my foot.”
Charlie caws at that, spinning around, ready to shoot back. As he begins to get up, he visibly deflates. “This is too much effort,” he says, turning back around and settling back against the couch.
A silence passes over them as they continue to watch the talking heads on the screen discuss the Rangers’ trade movements and how they affect their playoff chances for the upcoming season. It’s still sad to hear about Nelly and Cash but Ryan knows it’s part of the game, part of the business. They desperately need a more solid D-core and management got it done.
That doesn’t really make making those phone calls any more pleasant.
“Hopefully I won't be Godfather Part III,” Charlie mumbles around the three Oreos that he shoved in his mouth, bring Ryan back to reality.
“You will be if you keep eating Oreos for breakfast, Charles,” their mom says as she walks through the living room.
Eyes wide, Charlie gulps down the Oreos.
“Godfather Part III wasn't even that bad,” Ryan comforts him, “just that one female lead was...not the best.”
“You're too kind,” Charlie tells him fondly, patting his cheek condescendingly. “The world doesn't deserve you, kiddo.”
“You do remember that I'm three years older than you, right, kiddo?” Ryan responses mockingly.
“Age is nothing but a number,” Charlie winks.
“Besides, Audrey is older than you anyway, so she would technically be Godfather Part III,” Ryan reminds him.
“So I would be Godfather Part IV, the nonexistent part?!” Oh great, the indignance makes a comeback. “So what you’re saying is, I’m not going to have a professional hockey career? Wow.” Charlie begins wiping fake tears from his eyes. “I’m hurt, Ryan. Really, you’ve hurt me. I will never recover.”
Ryan just rolls his eyes, not even bothering to dignify his dramatics with a response.
“Your cruel words are driving me to eating my feelings,” Charlie finishes as he begins his retreat to the food pantry.
“Charles Jérôme Blackburn, if you eat one more Oreo, I swear to God,” his mom berates from upstairs. Charlie backtracks and sits back down on the couch with wide eyes.
“How did she know?” Charlie hisses.
