While I don't even look at the TV anymore (but have other things that sort of fill the void there), I understand the whole thing, it's put in words I could have written.
I have some true friends, not a lot though. I don't sugarcoat anything, friendship isn't really different from a love relation, well, considering you want something serious, in that ignoring or going over things in other people that you know will be problematic will eventually mean to an empty/fake relation.
I have enough friends, and I picked them carefully along the way. And in such a way that I know they picked me too. It's all about finding the right people, and that is a very material problem.
I assure you though that there isn't much space for true friends in one's life with the way we live, we're just too busy working or recuperating from it.
