Name: Saten
Gender: Female
Age: Born an estimated 8000 years ago, “died” about 6000 years ago, reborn a year and a half ago
Wing Color: Black
Physical Appearance: Saten is a bit short, standing around 5’2 or so. However, she doesn’t give off the impression of being such, and holds a commanding presence wherever she goes. She has long black hair that is almost always tied back, usually in a high ponytail but sometimes low instead, and her eyes are a bright yellow. She appears to be somewhere in her mid-twenties, due to her immortality, she came into creation at her current age and has remained with the same appearance through both incarnations. Saten is slightly underweight in appearance, which may be due to the fact she doesn’t rely on food to subsist, though she hasn’t bothered testing this. She also has black wings that she can make appear and hide at will. Fully extended, they’re about five feet from her back to wingtip, and the feathers on them, while appearing solid at their base, taper and fade out so that they seem to become intangible rather than having a solid end. Because these wings never actually go away, she’s heavy for her size, around 140 pounds regardless of whether her wings are visible or not.
History: A long, long time ago, there was only darkness. And within this darkness, God created light to drive back this darkness. In order to keep the light from going out, he created his followers, a flock of angels, to keep him strong and surround him with hope. Then from within this light, humans were born. These creatures were weak, but full of promise, and so God taught them, and they learned. To this day, God is still protecting humans from the darkness and helping them to overcome their weaknesses.
At least, that’s what it says in the books. The way it actually went down, you see, was a little different.
He wasn’t originally called God. His name was, and still is, Yuhel. “God” was the arrogant label he imposed for himself when the Great War ended. But that’s getting a bit ahead of the story.
No one knows how the two of them came into existence, but the first two creatures to exist in this universe were creations of opposites: Yuhel, the being of light, and Saten, the being of darkness. In the beginning, both of them were extremely powerful; but as time went on and the world began to take shape around them, and others were created by their wills, their powers dimmed. At first, they were like two children exploring a place for the first time. They created and destroyed at their whims, they competed and they cooperated. They perfectly matched each other, and for a long time, there was harmony.
In their own images, they created others, borrowing ideas and traits that weren’t their own at their whims. But try as they might, they could not alter their own natures. Yuhel, as a power manifested from light, could only create creatures that were of the light themselves. And Saten, whose powers manifested from darkness, was only able to create creatures of the darkness. At first there were the two of them, and soon, there were six. Three of the light: two males and a female, and three of the darkness: two females and one male. With these first creations, Saten and Yuhel no longer needed to be friends. Now they had their own set of friends, friends like themselves, and so the distance between them started to grow. Still, six is but a small number, and the groups weren’t entirely separate. They still cooperated, though there was more competition than before.
Eventually, they created more: four creatures each, and the numbers were no longer quite so balanced within. With this new batch, it became clear to both of them that their powers were weakening. The creatures they created where not as powerful as the ones that had been created before them. In one great attempt to stop this downward trend, the two combined their powers in equal parts to create a creature that would exist as both light and darkness. However, this attempt failed. The power they had both poured into this experiment, rather than forming a living creature as all the previous had, instead solidified and perished. It manifested itself as matter and clumped into a ball, one very special ball of matter that was born in a way different from all the other balls of matter that existed in the universe around them. This ball became the planet Earth.
That was the last time Yuhel and Saten met on friendly terms.
From there on, the two of began to create indiscriminately. The sides segregated, each kept to their own, and as time went on, their powers waned faster and faster. It was obvious that the universe was reaching one of two eventualities: total separation, or a war.
When the total number of creatures numbered around three hundred total, several things happened in rapid succession, so rapid that it’s unclear exactly which came first. Yuhel and Saten lost their abilities to create living beings. Of those they had created, all but the first two groups-the first fourteen-began to age. And lastly, on that fateful planet Earth, a new form of life came into being, completely outside the influence of darkness and light. They lacked many of the abilities that those created by Yuhel or Saten possessed, and what was immediately most striking, they had neither black nor white wings. In all other respects, they seemed exactly the same. For once, there was a need for a distinction. From this divide words were created. Those without wings were termed “humans”, and those with, “angels”.
Humans, without eternal lifespan, possessed the ability to reproduce. Additionally, the “lower” angels, those who began to age, also gained the same ability. This served as a slap in the face to both Yuhel and Saten, who both had lost their own abilities to create another living creature. As a force outside both of their controls, humans were seen as something to claim. A small group of Yuhel’s angels were the first to descend to Earth and make contact with humans. When word of this reached Saten, she declared war against Yuhel and his forces. Thus began the Great War.
The Great War consisted of three stages. The initial stage was at the very beginning of the war. Suddenly, all the animosity which had been growing since Yuhel and Satan went their separate ways was brought to the surface. The flood gates opened, the fighting began, and over half the forces perished within the first couple days. In an effort to stop the bloodshed, the second stage began as Yuhel and Saten finally turned against each other. Their battle lasted for several days, and was down to the wire. Despite their loss of power over the ages, the two still ranked evenly as the strongest angels.
Eventually, Yuhel defeated Saten and killed her. With this, the final stage began: the slaughter. With Saten no longer around as a threat to the angels of light, they hunted without fear of repercussions. It was this which drove the last of the angels of darkness to Earth, hiding their wings and disguising themselves among humans. The angels of light followed, however, they were not so secretive.
With no one to challenge him, Yuhel appeared to the humans and established himself as “God”. He taught them as he wished and condemned everything that separated Saten from himself. It was through this that the humans came to accept light as “good” and darkness as “bad”, men as “strong” and women as “weak”, teamwork over individuality, restraint over indulgence, and a whole host of other dynamics. He separated the angels of light from the angels of darkness, casting the latter under a new name: demons. To drive out and destroy the last of them, Yuhel decreed that they were evil, and to be hunted.
The original angels of light all possessed a power which allowed them to see through the disguise of human, and discover which ones are angels in hiding, whether they are of darkness or of light. However, as a counter to this, the original angels of darkness all possessed a power which lets them form a connection. Under this connection, they have a very limited amount of control over the other being’s body, but more importantly, the two share any damage inflicted on either body. It was with their power the angels of light sought to kill the final angels of darkness, and it was with their power the last angels of darkness avoided their own deaths. Unfortunately, almost all on both sides were mortal, aging, and dying. But, angels were able to breed with humans, and had the capacity to turn their offspring into angels as well. Whether or not these offspring inherited their parent’s particular power seemed left to chance. A human with the capacity to be turned into an angel can be physically identified by an angel of the same alignment, and a descendant of an angel of darkness could go undetected by angels of light.
Slowly, as the years went by, more humans began to bear the mark of an angel ancestor, and the number of angels possessing the specific power of their respective side waned. Bit by bit, Yuhel’s influence among the humans began to wane, as the angels of darkness could reproduce and spread further with less and less worry of detection. The number of fights that broke out between the sides dwindled to merely a handful of scuffles per year, and angels as well as “demons” as a truth of the world fell out of the eye of the average human.
That was until, beneath the surface, something began to stir again. No one was quite sure what it was that started the unrest, but both angels of light and angels of darkness could feel it. Fights began to happen with a greater frequency. Something was happening, and they all knew it. The question was what.
Then one day, without the influence of either side, a human turned into an angel. This event, while not rare, was certainly uncommon. The difference was, this time, the angel who came into existence was not one of light nor one of darkness. He was both. Such a creature had never been born before, and for a while, his existence was kept a secret.
Ten years later, an angel of darkness by the name of Shanelle happened to realize that a human friend of hers, who didn’t bear the mark of a human who could be made into an angel, nevertheless had a power similar to that only possessed by angels of darkness. When she tried to turn her friend into an angel, what emerged were not only black wings, but an entire figure along with them: Saten had been reborn into the world.
The angels of light were uneasy, and the angels of darkness emerged from hiding, rallying around their renewed leader. Now another war was brewing, with a mysterious third party involved: the angel of both darkness and light had found other humans who could be made into angels like him, and he was building his own side. The fighting has not yet broken out, but it is easily visible on the horizon. This time, Earth will be the battleground.
Personality:
One of the most important things to understand about Saten is that she is not, in fact, evil. Many of her actions, habits, tastes, and preferences tend towards what most would consider “immoral”, but she isn’t inherently evil. She lives for herself and for her own experiences, and she’ll rarely ever give without expecting a gain. But she does have a moral code that she follows, and though she breaks it on occasion, she breaks it deliberately.
One thing that she rarely does is forgive. Saten remembers who has wronged her, or not followed through on deals and promises. She is one for retaliation, though usually the level of severity lines up with the offense: accidental wrongdoing usually begets little more than a few relatively harmless pranks, deliberate wrongdoing tends to have more severe repercussions, and pity the poor soul who breaks a deal just to get something from her without equal repayment. Even beyond her retaliation, she holds grudges. These are rarely forgotten, and even if she pretends that nothing has gone awry in the past, if asked outright she’ll admit that no, things aren’t “all right now”. She believes in a system that benefits the strong: you’re allowed to take advantage of those weaker than you. Of course, the only one she sees as being her equal is Yuhel, so her attitude allows her to come out the better for any sort of deal she would make.
Outwardly, she has a carefree, almost playful attitude towards people and the world in general. She’s honest well past the point of being blunt, and almost seems nice until one realizes that her kindness only comes from her sense of superiority or expectation of repayment. Still, there’s always a darker side to her words, a side that detests Yuhel’s influence and the pervasiveness of it through the attitudes of everyone around her. She has no qualms about causing others pain, especially as a result of their own beliefs. This can often jar those she’s interacting with if they’re not expecting it.
Saten hates not getting her way, and can at times act rather spoiled. She is actually a very internally emotional person despite her usually mild exterior, so when her hidden emotions break though, the results are often extreme, and all too frequently dangerous. She’s been known to throw tantrums, where “tantrums” is more defined as “snapping and destroying things”. She’s also very proud, and more than a little touchy about the spelling of her name, which even in her own world was messed up somewhere down the line.
What Saten fears above all else is a world consumed by light and drowned in Yuhel’s influence. She was half of the force that caused the creation of her universe, and she doesn’t want her efforts to all be for naught. Her driving motivation is to spread her own influence to counteract Yuhel’s and eventually erase it from the world that was mostly taken from her. She believes she’s entitled to the world she put in the effort for, and hates anyone who would take that from her.
Strengths: (Physical, mental and emotional)
Physical - As the highest level being in her world, Saten possesses a strong degree of magic. Even though her strength is barely a fraction of what it originally was, she can still create darkness at will. This darkness can no longer form stand-alone objects, and nothing she makes can continue to exist beyond the period when she’s sustaining it unless she puts an incredibly large amount of effort into it. However, she can still use it to create things such as weapons and shields temporarily for use in fights. Additionally, she possesses a very weak ability to heal herself, and can use this power on others only if they also are primarily composed of darkness. She can fly using her wings, though she can only hover by creating objects to stand on. Her reaction time is very fast. While she used to be able to completely sink into shadows and remain in them indefinitely, she can now use them only for short-range teleportation and can’t spend any length of time in such a form which is entirely compressed into pure darkness. She can synchronize with other beings as mentioned in her history, but the power is explained in more detail
here.
Mental - Saten is very strong-willed and it’s very hard to manipulate or take advantage of her. She has a very good memory. She also has an ESP-like sense which uses her connection to darkness to feel the location of shadows around her, which works passively.
Emotional - Most of the time, she can keep her emotions in check and under control.
Weaknesses: (Physical, mental and emotional)
Physical - One artifact of her world is the repercussion of injuries on one’s own side. If she inflicts any direct harm on another being that registers as aligning with “darkness” (in her own world, these would only be angels of darkness) then that damage would be duplicated on herself. However this goes both ways: anyone with the same alignment inflicting injuries on her would receive the same themselves. There’s a more detailed explanation
here. Physically, she is pretty weak, and while she has quick reaction times she can’t actually move her center of mass very fast due to the excessive weight of her wings. She also injures easily thanks to her relatively frail body. Any outside healing, if it is a light-aligned magic, will also damage her.
Mental - Though she is strong-willed, if she synchronizes with a being whose will outweighs her own, there’s a chance the connection will backlash on her and instead she’ll wind up being the one influenced. While smart, she’s not particularly intelligent.
Emotional - Saten is very selfish and, at times, childish. She lashes out when she gets too upset, and resents people for their beliefs even though it’s simply what they’ve been brought up being told. She doesn’t care if she hurts people and is severely lacking in empathy.
Samples (ALL samples must be set in Luceti-verse.)
First Person:
Ah, what have we here? I wasn’t expecting there to be a village of all things. This place just seems far too empty for my tastes. But, I suppose I’m not exactly being... granted much choice here. I suppose I can make this my home for a bit. Go on. We’ll see how long this place can hold me.
Were the rest of you pulled here like me? I wonder if any of you were created in this world. What brought about this place, if not light and darkness? Alright. I can be curious. Let’s see what’s going on in this world. If it’s interesting enough, I might not even kill the one responsible for dragging me here.
Third Person:
She stood up from the ground, already naked, having stripped the white dress from her body moments before. Slowly, she looked around her, trying to figure out what was going on. This wasn’t the Earth she knew. This wasn’t the planet that she had helped to create. That much she could tell. It was strange to feel the world around her like this; she had never existed in such a place that hadn’t been created at least partially of her own power.
Saten could still feel all the shadows that danced across the ground by her feet, but her connection to them was so much weaker than it should be. This whole universe was strange, different... like her own, but distinct. It lacked both Yuhel’s influence as well as her own. She couldn’t decide whether it was freeing or stifling. Either way, it was unlike anything she’d ever felt before.
Was this what it was like to be a human? The moment she had the thought, it sickened her. She, Saten, the powerful and proud, the embodiment of darkness, reduced nearly to the level of the powerless beings which could do nothing but walk the planet and drink up the lies that Yuhel fed to them. The small black wings, covered in tangible feathers were mocking her, mocking the grace and beauty that were her true wings, the wings that represented her position and her strength.
The white fabric of her discarded dress lay in a crumpled heap, and almost as an afterthought, she stepped on it and ground it into the dirt. White. Too white. She wasn’t going to wear that. How dare anyone even suggest such a thing.
Saten rolled her shoulders, and from her back, large, pitch-black wings unfurled to the ground. Against her hopes they didn’t replace the new additions, but they had at least remained untouched; the edges vanishing into the air or almost merging with the shadows by her feet. “Hmph. At least I still have those.”
