After leaving Nero and Ayel, Helen went immediately to her office, still absorbing everything she'd learned. Ask the Vulcans, Ayel had said. Talk to Spock. He hadn't been able to tell her what, exactly, to ask about. But he'd been insistent. And even Nero had grudgingly agreed to let her share what he'd said.


Commander,

We haven't met, and I apologize for not introducing myself in person. My name is Dr. Helen Noel; I'm a psychiatrist and psychologist recently assigned to the Enterprise. I've also been working with the Romulan prisoners, Nero and Ayel.

I'm sure you're familiar with their background; I also know that you spent some time with them on their ship. Recently, I've discovered something that has the potential to be very important in helping understand the root cause of Nero's condition. Ayel suggested that you might be able to explain it; he was unable to do so.

I'm sorry for being cryptic; these messages are on the record and this is confidential information, which I have permission to share only so far as is necessary to help my patients. I wonder if you might be willing to meet with me in person and discuss this issue. Please let me know if you're willing to offer your expertise.
