We twa hae paidl’d in the burn,
frae morning sun till dine ;
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
sin’ auld lang syne.
We two once paddled in the stream,
from dawn till dinner time;
But seas between us broad have roared
since once upon a time.
Robbie Burns - Auld Lang Syne
(
The tinny notes cut through the silence of the country night. )

Came out of the blue, it did, probably from seeing all the how they celebrated in Ulan Bator-type articles. Took about a couple of hours, if you ignore the countless fiddles and word-tweaks that have gone on since.
Hope the bit with the neck-chains made sense. I realised about four lines in that I'd painted myself into a corner, since there was no way I could sensibly write Doug's side of the conversation in that PoV. All good practice...
