“Dude, are you okay? You’re not like, brain-dead are you? Jongdae, speak to me!” Baekhyun shouts as he shakes Jongdae awake from his nap. He had really just been resting his eyes when Baekhyun slammed open the door to his room and jumped on his bed without warning. Now he pushes the unwanted intruder off his bed and pulls his covers up to his chin.
“Would it kill you to knock every once in a while?”
“Well if you were brain-dead how were you supposed to open the door?”
“If I was brain-dead why would you try to wake me up by shaking me?” He sits up and finds Baekhyun smiling his cheeky grin from where he’s sitting on the floor, legs spread out in front of him. He’s not saying anything but his grin makes Jongdae want to shut him up, so he throws a pillow at his face.
Baekhyun sputters as the pillow lands in his lap. “Wow, for a sick man you sure are active. You know I can’t even throw it back at you, this is completely unfair.”
“Looks like I’ve finally found a perk to having a concussion.” Jongdae sighs and leans back on the pillows he’s piled high against his headboard. “Trust me, there aren’t many.”
“I believe it. You don’t even have a cool scar or a badass story to show off once you’re back in school.” Baekhyun lets out a short high-pitched laugh as he gets up to sit on Jongdae’s bed. “But I mean, you would be that guy who would get a concussion from playing ultimate frisbee.”
“There’s a reason it’s called ultimate, you jackass. Frisbee gets intense, okay? At least I play an actual sport, unlike someone who joined the debate team just so they could prove people wrong.”
Baekhyun let’s out a tsk and shakes his head. “Of course someone who gets hurt at a game that literally even a kindergartener could figure out wouldn’t appreciate the satisfaction that comes with proving someone wrong. I would explain it to you but I was told you’re not supposed to be thinking too hard while you recover.”
Another pillow goes flying at Baekhyun’s head but he ducks this time. The pillow hits the Girls Generation poster that he’d given Jongdae last year, then sinks to the ground. Baekhyun follows the pillow’s trajectory with his eyes but his gaze remains on the poster.
“Did you come here to ogle at that poster again? I already told you I didn’t want it but you were the one that insisted--”
“I was just trying to liven up your boring room, and your boring taste in music. I bet you didn’t even listen to the songs I sent you.”
“You sent me Girls Generation’s whole discography, Baek.”
“Exactly!” Baekhyun gives an exasperated sigh. “Typical. I do you a huge favor and you never appreciate it, as is evidenced by the fact that I came here out of the goodness of my heart to lift you out of your monotonous recovery and you thank me by throwing pillows at my head.”
Jongdae raises his eyebrows so much he swears they disappear into his hairline. “You’re here to relieve my boredom?”
“Obviously. Your mom told me you can’t read or look at computer screens or anything like that, and I thought, ‘Wow, that’s gotta suck.’ So here I am.” Baekhyun puts his hands underneath his chin and tilts his head as he smiles. “Best friend of the year award or what?”
“How selfless of you.” Jongdae rolls his eyes but he’s smiling. “So what did you have planned?”
“Well, since all you can really do is listen to music, I was thinking now would be the perfect time to listen to those songs I sent you--”
Jongdae groans as he slides down the bed so that he’s lying flat again. He pulls the covers over his head. “Baek, I don’t really think sugary pop music is what I should be listening to if I’m trying to keep my headaches away.”
“Relax, I’m only joking. I actually need your help with something.” Jongdae peeks the top half of his head out from under the covers just as Baekhyun scoots up the bed so that he’s sitting next to Jongdae, but on top of the covers.
“You know the new a capella group Kyungsoo’s forming soon? Well, I wanna be in it, so I have to audition.” He scoffs and rolls his eyes. “I know, it’s ridiculous that I have to audition in the first place, but Kyungsoo was going on and on about,” he puts his fingers up in air quotes, “‘fairness’ and ‘no favoritism’ or some shit like that. I mean, I know I’m a shoo-in, but I still wanna do this right just so I can rub it in his face when I sound great, you know?”
“Yeah yeah, just tell me what songs you’re thinking.”
“Okay, let me sing you the first one I had in mind.”
Jongdae nods and closes his eyes as Baekhyun sings a ballad he’s not familiar with. When he’s done, Jongdae nods again.
“Impressive. That was a nice song, who was it by?”
Baekhyun’s face breaks out into a sly grin. “Girls Generation.” When Jongdae pulls the covers over his head again Baekhyun adds, “Hey, you liked it! I was right, see?”
“On second thought, you really shouldn’t do that one, you sounded horrible.” Baekhyun lightly kicks Jongdae’s leg through the covers and Jongdae pops his head out again. “Ow! Don’t kick the sick person.”
“Suck it up, you big baby. Anyway, this one’s for real, so tell me what you think.”
The rest of the afternoon goes by like that, Baekhyun singing and Jongdae offering his comments, ranging in seriousness from that one was slightly out of your range to can you try to sound less like an angry maltese on those high notes? Drowsiness hits him and slowly he loses the energy to utter more than a good or mhm. Baekhyun keeps singing, but the songs he chooses get slower and softer until finally the sound of his voice fades to silence in Jongdae’s ears as he falls asleep.
