CHARACTER
Name: Night
Series: The Miyama-Uguisu Mansion Incident (AKA the pilot chapter of Ao no Exorcist)
Canon: He's being treated as an AU to Okumura Rin
Age: unknown, appears to be a teenager
Timeline: He's coming from the end of the chapter linked in the 'series' section.
World Information: It's pretty much identical to the world of Ao no Exorcist, the only difference being demons seem to be able to manifest in the human world without possessing someone. Also key main characters from the actual series are different in the pilot chapter, and some are missing entirely.
History: Many years ago, there lived a small, cat-like demon. This demon was so small and weak that all the other demons-including Pazuzu, the demon that the little demon served under- treated him terribly. They made fun of him, beat him up, and just generally treated him horribly. The little demon didn't know anything beyond being treated terribly by others, so he was always on guard against attacks.

One day, while hiding under a bush, the demon was found by a little human girl. The demon distrusted the girl at first, thinking she would just hurt him like everyone else had. However, this girl was surprisingly gentle, and she took in the demon, thinking he was a normal cat. She treated his wounds and fed him, so the demon started to trust this girl. The demon ended up living with the girl's family for several months, during which time he got his name: Night. Night was very happy living with that family, and it was the first time he had ever come to care for other people.

But Night's brief time of happiness came to an abrupt end when Pazuzu, the demon Night was an underling to, found the girl and her family. Apparently the girl had the kind of beauty that is only born once a century, and Pazuzu decided that he wanted that for himself. A girl is most delicious on her 16th birthday, so Pazuzu possessed a close family member and kept a close watch over the girl, slowly driving her to despair over the course of ten years. First he killed her parents, then he became her controlling guardian, slowly taking away her freedom and corrupting her over the course of ten years.

Night wanted to stop Pazuzu. More than anything else, he wanted to keep the girl safe. However, Night lacked the power to defeat Pazuzu. He was far weaker than the great demon who always bullied him, and he stood no chance against that kind of power. Still, Night tried to talk to Pazuzu, trying to get him to let the girl go. In response, Pazuzu beat the shit out of Night and left him to die.

Shortly after that, Night was found by two exorcists from the Knights of the Blue Cross. The two exorcists considered killing Night, but Night begged them to teach him how to be an exorcist and kill demons. He was determined to stop Pazuzu and save the girl who had taken care of him. The exorcists agreed, and Night was allowed to become an exorcist.

Over the course of ten years, Night trained hard and eventually became a first-class exorcist. He had gained the strength he needed to beat Pazuzu. So, with a shiny new human form, Night went back to that house he had left ten years ago. It was close, and Night had to give it everything he had, but somehow he triumphed over Pazuzu and saved the girl's life.

Of course, he still had to work as an exorcist, even though he had completed his goal. So, Night returned to the Order, where he continued to be an exorcist.

Personality: Seeing as how Night is an early version of Rin, he shares quite a few traits with his canon counterpart. He's loud, straight to the point, and always sticks his nose in other people's business. He has absolutely no problems with shoving someone out of the way to get where he needs to go, and he will be the first to complain if something is wrong. Don't mistake this for rudeness, though: Night is just very blunt with his words, and he gets right to the heart of a situation instead of tiptoeing around it. He's a very no-nonsense kind of guy, and he doesn't like listening to lies or excuses.

Night also has a bit of a violent streak. Since he's a demon, it's in his nature to solve his problems with his fists and his sword rather than his words. He does try to keep that side of himself under control, but piss him off and he will let it all go. A quick way to get on his bad side is to threaten violence to someone Night cares about. If he's fighting a demon, he's the type to rush forward and attack rather than give in to demands.

However, Night isn't completely like Rin. There are some key differences between the two, namely that Night has way more patience than Rin could ever hope to have. Over the years Night has learned to control his temper, and he will keep it in check and try to solve problems instead of creating more. Night can stop himself and take a breather when he's starting to lose his temper.

He's also smarter than Rin, at least as far as interpersonal communication is concerned. He's especially talented at seeing through lies and getting to the heart of a matter, whereas Rin is more likely to believe a tall tale if it sounds realistic. Night is also just plain better at communicating with people, and he manages to hold conversations without looking like a douchebag. Most of the time. His bluntness does hurt his efforts from time to time, but Night is fortunate enough in that people who don't want to cooperate with him are usually the demons he's trying to kill anyway.

Night is also pretty good at planning. Unlike Rin, who rushes into a fight right away, Night will take time to plan his attack, and he tries to make sure he has a backup plan in the wings in case something goes wrong. Of course, when all else fails he resorts to stabbing things, which isn't too far off from what Rin does, but that initial planning is vital to Night's survival. Night is definitely not the strongest demon out there. He has to fight beings stronger than him, and he knows he will be killed if he fails. While Rin has the power of Satan to rely on, and later on in Ao no Exorcist he has friends and family to back him up, Night is a low-level demon who is completely on his own. Because of that, Night has to use his smarts to win, rather than pure strength. He has to use his powers effectively, or else he will die.

Also, Night is a very solitary being. He doesn't trust people easily, and he's more likely to keep people at an arm's distance for quite some time. It takes a lot to get Night to trust someone, but once that bridge is crossed Night becomes insanely loyal. He will do anything to protect the people he cares about, even going as far as to violate the laws of nature (demons don't typically become exorcists, after all) in order to keep them safe. It might take a lot of effort, but earning Night's trust gets you a loyal friend for life.

But the biggest difference between Night and Rin is that Night has been an exorcist for nearly a decade, while Rin is just getting started. Night's techniques are much more refined, and he has this air of maturity that Rin hasn't quite gotten down yet. In fact, Night is pretty much what Rin will probably be like in ten years. Most of the differences between them (the patience, the tendency to plan attacks instead of rushing in, the knowledge of exorcisms, and so forth) are things that come with age and experience, so it makes Night look like an older version of Rin. Well, sort of: Night still looks like a teenager. He just acts like someone older.

Abilities/Additional Notes: While most of the exorcist abilities aren't expanded on in the pilot chapter, it's possible to tell what kind of exorcist Night is by looking at what he does. At one point his exorcist license is shown, and it lists him as a Knight. That means he uses primarily sword-based skills. He also has general knowledge of exorcisms, such as how to use holy water and how to protect humans from demons.

Along with that, Night has his demon abilities. Those abilities are sealed into his sword, though, so he can only use most of them when he has drawn his sword to fight. He's shown as getting a boost in strength, speed, and dexterity as soon as he releases his powers. He also gets demon fire around him, and possibly fire control. Other demons are shown to possess humans and use demonic whispers to corrupt people, but it's unknown if Night has these powers or not, and Night wouldn't use them anyway.

When his sword is sheathed, Night has two forms: a normal-looking human form, and a tiny cat form. He can also understand and speak to both humans and demons.

Third-Person Sample: It had taken nearly twenty minutes for the tearful mother to explain the situation to Night. He sat there patiently, both listening and watching the family in front of him, trying to get a read for the situation. While their words told much of the story, their reactions to hearing it told just as much. That was the funny thing about humans: they showed their emotions far too much, and it was that much easier for Night to figure out what was going on.

"…And that's the whole story," the mother said, finishing up her explanation, "Ever since that day, our son has been attacking the neighborhood cats. We're not a violent family, we don't condone this kind of behavior, so I don't know what it could be!"

Once again, the mother started to sob uncontrollably. Her husband reached over and placed a comforting hand on her back, though his eyes were set on Night. "Can you do anything for us," the man asked.

Night took a moment to glance over at the boy, who was standing at the doorway listening to the story. His eyes looked empty and haunted, like he knew the horrors of the world despite only being ten. But beneath that look, Night saw something else: disbelief. The boy didn't think Night would be able to do anything, that these horrors would continue to happen.

Challenge accepted, Night thought to himself.

"I can," Night said, looking back to the parents, "This is a clear case of demonic possession."

That sentence earned a gasp from the wife, and the husband quickly responded with, "How could that be? We're a Christian family!"

"What, you think demons don't target Christians," Night said, "You can go on believing that if you want, but your son is only going to get worse. Going to church every Sunday isn't going to keep the demons away."

The bluntness of that statement was enough to shock the parents, and it earned Night some silence. Night took that moment to speak again, saying, "You're lucky, though. This isn't a serious problem yet. I should be able to take care of this in one night." After a short pause, he said, "If you'll let me, that is."

The wife quickly nodded, saying, "Yes, we'll do anything! Just save our baby boy!"

That's just what Night needed. Smiling, Night said, "Great!" Then he stood up and pointed to the staircase at the far end of the room. "You two will need to go upstairs for the rest of the night. Go in your room, lock your door, and don't come out, no matter what you hear."

"Are you sure that's necessary," the father asked, sounding wary, "We want to be here, with our son, while he goes through all of this."

"Hey, I'm the exorcist here, remember? I know how to do my own job." In a softer voice, he added, "Don't worry, your son will be safe. I won't do anything that will harm him, you have my word."

It took a bit of effort, but finally the parents were ushered upstairs, leaving Night alone with the boy. Night looked over to the doorway again, where the boy continued to stand. He looked nervous now, Night could tell. With a soft smile, Night walked across the room and crouched down in front of the boy. "Hey there," he said, now eye-level with the boy, "I bet that demon has been pretty scary, huh? It's not too nice of him to take over those cats, is it?"

The boy's eyes widened, and Night knew he had hit the nail on the head. While everyone had thought that the problem was with the boy, Night knew that couldn't be the case. The boy hadn't reacted at all to seeing Night walk in the door. No, the demon here was taking control of neighborhood animals in order to torture this poor kid, corrupting him slowly. That's how these demons worked: they tormented children until they were ripe for eating.

Night reached out and patted the boy on the head. "Don't you worry one bit. I'm going to take care of that demon for you."

Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small vial of water. He opened it and dumped it on the boy's head. Next he gave the boy a cross on a rope to wear and hold onto. With this, the boy would at least have some protection.

But Night's actions had alerted the demon tormenting this boy. Already he could hear the yowls of an angry cat outside, and he could see the boy become visibly shaken. "Looks like it's time to get to work," he said, trying his best to sound calm, if only to keep the boy calm too, "You stay right here, okay? And don't answer if anyone calls for you, you need to be as silent as a mouse."

The boy nodded, which was enough for Night. He stood up and headed for the door, hand on his sword as he walked. He would have liked to have more time to prepare, but this would have to do. As long as the boy kept quiet, everything should go fine. With one last, deep breath, Night walked through the door, ready to go to work.

First-Person Sample Journal Post: [When the video recording starts, there is a close up of a single eye. Someone is clearly closely inspecting the shiny new toy he may have just gotten.

The voice that can be heard a moment later might possibly sound familiar, too.]

This thing is pretty awesome! Man, how come the Order doesn't have stuff like this? It'd be way easier to keep in contact with everyone.

[Suddenly the image zooms out, as the person handling the PDA pulls it away from his face. His demeanor visibly shifts from amused to surprised as he realizes the thing is recording.]

Crap, it's already on?

[But he pretty quickly decides that he might as well make use of this, if it's already on.]

So yeah, I'm with the Knights of the Blue Cross, and I think I might have gotten lost. Can anyone point me to the nearest branch? I should probably report in before they freak out or something. Any help would be awesome.
