it's an infrared filter over the lens. it picks up on light that is caused by how hot things. infrared is outside the spectrum of what the human eye can see so the filter can be really fun to use! it's also a really slow exposure (I usually do anywhere from 2 to 6 seconds) so that's what gives it that smooth, surreal sort of quality (especially in the water because the ripples just read as smoother than they really are).
