Character: Sorin
Series/Fandom: Vampire Babylon (by Chris Marie Green)

Age: 340, looks about 28.
Gender: Male
Species: Vampire.
Canon Used: The books, excluding any short stories written for the series, mainly it’s just the first three books with maybe me trying to work in a modified version of the next three if I have enough courage.

Appearance:
http://handson.provocateuse.com/images/photos/alexis_denisof_03.jpg Psychology: Sorin is a fairly complex man, he’s had a hard life (although fun at several points) and this has marked him in quite a few ways, he’s not a very trusting person and he’s had to shoulder a lot over the years, including some quite heavy issues.
Sorin’s main characteristic is being cautious, he hasn’t trusted easily ever since his birth family kicked him out 320 years ago… The only person he truly trusts is his Master/father, everybody else is regarded with a lot of caution, he constantly expects a betrayal to come and is constantly on his toes as a result, everybody is a potential enemy, everybody is out to get him.
He also has quite serious abandonment issues, his original family rejected him after all and he’s still resentful over that, plus very clingy to any family figures… It’d take a lot for him to abandon his father and set out on his own, he’d prefer not to risk being left alone, as a result he’s also very hesitant of starting his own family, he made two daughters once and they abandoned him too, as a result he feels that everybody will leave him in the end and he’s extremely insecure at the thought of that.
Sorin isn’t completely defined by his fear of being left though, he also carries a mild superiority complex… For many years he was the first and only child of his father and he still carries the smugness of that around his siblings, as a vampire he also regards humans with a faint hint of superiority although (oddly) it is less than that he feels around his siblings, he respects humans for the skills they offer.
He does tend to hate his siblings, despite his father’s inclination to get carried away with them Sorin hasn’t been that flighty for years, he hates the world of show business in all its forms and isn’t impressed by their posturing and dramatics, he’d much prefer to work in the background and do something sensible… Something that actually goes to plan too.
Sorin’s a bit of a perfectionist you see, and unlike his fellow vampires he’ll use any method to make things absolutely perfect, he won’t have a complete fit if everything isn’t amazing but he will be grumpy for ages after things get ruined, he’s rather focused on everything running perfectly, and as such rarely manages to relax, he’s too busy worrying about things going wrong.
He does tend to worry a lot, he’s one of those people who can never be completely at peace with anything, he’s always expecting something to go horribly wrong… Which has actually proved useful in several situations but also isn’t very pleasant for Sorin at all, he ends up being rushed off his feet most of the time and has about ten minor panics a day.
He can also be surprisingly narrow minded at times, he believes in free love and magic but he’ll completely reject the existence of any aliens, angels or demons… He’s a lot more grounded than most people who become vampires and refuses to believe in any “crackpot” theories these days; as far as he’s concerned there are no aliens or anything else apart from vampires and magic users.
The thing is that Sorin feels like he has to be the sensible one, he’s been around hysterical Elites for so long, he can rarely let go and enjoy himself, usually he ends up being quite stiff around people unless they offer him something extremely useful, he isn’t all that sure on the fine points of enjoying life, he knows how to flirt and have lots of sex but he hasn’t really got the hang of relaxing, he’s constantly on his guard.
So, that’s Sorin, fairly grounded for a vampire but still with a fair amount of issues… Even if he does secretly long for a quiet life, he’s not a normal vampire by most means but he manages to get by.
Mainly because he’s smarter than most of them.
Other Skills/Abilities: -Great night vision
-Great agility
-Increased healing capabilities
-Better senses
-“Vamp form”, basically this silvery thing that can fly and is a lot stronger than a human (though he won’t use this much, it hurts his back)
-Can heal surface wounds
-Faint magical skill, can make animals (up to the size of a large dog) do his bidding.
-Knows Latin.
-Faint skills with the sword.
Other Weaknesses: -A severe weakness to silver, even if he just receives a scratch with a silver thing he will be poisoned and will probably die.
-Is not immune to fire, will die if shoved in it.
-He can’t stay in the sun for over six hours; if he does he’ll burn up
-Allergic to weevil blood (as crackily worked out by me and Pixie), he hasn’t discovered this yet because weevils don’t exist in his reality but it has roughly the same effect as silver.
-Tends to scare animals if he isn’t careful to control them, horses is particular tend to go for him whenever they can.
-Needs to take blood at least every three days, or else he’ll crumple into dust.
--Related to that: He must ask permission before he can drink, there’s no unauthorized drinking with Sorin’s type of vampire, the person must give permission before blood can be taken.
-Has no affection for water at all, he’ll sink like a stone if knocked into water.
-Can’t enter a house without permission, this only applies to permanently inhabited dwellings.
History: Sorin was born on the 18th November 1667 in a castle on the border of Hungary, a date that he remembers obsessively even though he doesn’t miss being human, it’s one link to his lost humanity and it’s best not to lose things: they might become useful later on in his experience.
He was the oldest son of the family (a extremely wealthy family) as so was treated specially from his birth, he was expected to be his father’s successor and so was educated highly and taught how to run a estate, he was prized as a high jewel and grew up knowing the best in life and being his parents favorite son.
For eighteen years all was perfect and pretty much normal for a upbringing of that time, he was engaged to a pretty heiress and was to be married to her on his twenty first birthday, he grew up in a time of quite a few wars but managed to avoid being called up to fight since his family managed to pass under the radar of royalty.
Then, three months after his eighteenth birthday, he stumbled upon an old male servant performing a magic trick… Fascinated, he blackmailed the servant into teaching him the tricks and proved to be a natural, learning quicker than his teacher could actually teach.
By the time of his twentieth birthday he had learned all of the skills that would carry him through later life, but things did not turn out well because of these skills… For the past year whispers had been growing among the servants of his talents, and after denying them for a few months his parents had started to take notice, the day after his twentieth birthday he was confronted by his father.
He denied it, of course, but his father refused to listen and kicked him out anyway… All alone in the world and fallen from grace Sorin fled from his birthplace and started using his skills to try and get money, despite the wariness over magic he could always draw a reasonable crowd and would usually stay until some paranoia freak forced him to move on.
He traveled for eight years (joined by a cat halfway through) and that time was fairly uneventful, no daring escapes, no risk of being killed… Just a lonely man moving through a great forest and just about managing to survive, Sorin tries not to remember that time in the present, it’s too depressing.
One night though… One night things abruptly changed.
Unknown to Sorin a man had been following him through the last four months of his human life, this man was an old man and a powerful one, not in any human measure of powerful but that hardly mattered, he was a child of the Dragon and a powerful Master… And just as lonely as Sorin.
He caught up to Sorin one night and although initially nervous soon Sorin warmed up to the man, they talked of travel and being abandoned; they talked of Sorin’s skills… And as the night drew on Sorin became rather drunk and gave the man permission to drink.
He had meant the wine, but his new father took a very different view of acceptable things to pour down his throat.
That night Sorin was turned, and he didn’t really appreciate it for about two years… For one thing his constant companion (the cat) ran off two nights after he became a vampire, for another thing he was along with a strange man and with strange new powers, he was completely unsure how to act.
Over time this reluctance faded however, by the time 1915 rolled around Sorin had accepted his role in life with a fair amount of happiness, happiness brought by many years of travel with his vamperic father as his only company, he had watched the world change around him and had been puzzled and yet delighted.
1915 was a important year for Sorin and his father, for it was then that the older vampire decided to finally found a underground (the dragon had sent out the command to go forth and multiply several years back, Sorin’s father had been slow to obey), settling in London they picked out a few people who never wanted the party to stop, those who agreed out of those people were turned into Sorin’s siblings and allowed into a bright underground.
They were happy for five years… And then disaster struck, another child of the dragon (Andre) arrived with a small army and attacked, killing all of Sorin’s siblings and driving the Master into a deep depression, it took a few months to coax Sorin’s father out of his room, and another few months to make him travel again.
This time they wandered with heavier hearts, Sorin trying to convince the Master to create another underground and the Master refusing every time, eventually they ended up in Hollywood in the 1950s… And then things started to look up again.
First, Sorin met his two future daughters (Geneva and Ginny, twins) and turned them later that night, then the Master came to life and suggested the building of another underground: a place for the Hollywood people, when the public started to get tired of them they could get turned, die dramatically and (with the aid of plastic surgery) come back a few years down the line and have another fantastic career.
…Yeah, Sorin’s basic reaction to that was a strong sense of puzzlement, his father was happy though and that was all that mattered.
The next twenty years were blissful for Sorin, not only was his father happy but he had his daughters along with him, and life (despite annoying Elites) was pretty much perfect… And then, twenty years on the dot since their rebirth, his daughters announced their intentions to rediscover their roots and set off for England the next day.
Sorin was heartbroken and had the same reaction to his father’s upon the loss of the first underground, he moped in his room for months and it was almost a year before he was actually acting like himself again, the scars still remain today even if his daughters are still alive somewhere (as proven by the continued existence of their children: the Groupies, who were mostly turned in the twenty years that his daughters were around.)
To comfort himself Sorin threw himself into creating the Guards, designed to protect the underground, and although things certainly weren’t perfect they weren’t terrible either…
Then Eva Claremont arrived.
Sorin’s father cherished a burning obsession for Eva, and immediately set around trying to win her over (a plan which Sorin disapproved of)… But after he brought a twelve year old actor (Robby) to the underground in a attempt to impress her she refused to entertain his advances at all, and in response the Master shrank into himself and refused to take much interest in anything, only waiting for the day that Eva’s left behind baby daughter would grow up and he could seduce her.
Needless to say, Sorin didn’t approve of this plan either.
So, that’s been the pattern for the past twenty years, the Master being depressed and Sorin being despairing… But now things have been happening rather quickly, Robby (still in the body of a twelve year old) has escaped, Eva’s been released and her daughter (a woman named Dawn Madison) has arrived back in town after the disappearance of her father.
Of course, that’s when he arrives on the Plane.
Canon Point: The start of book 1 (Night Rising)
Reality Description: Hollywood basically, occasionally extending a little outwards to “proper” LA and a few surrounding areas, except there is also the vampire underground, which is basically a place where all the elites and groupies (the sort of “grandchildren” of Sorin) reside, it’s described as a paradise and is a huge underground community just outside of LA in some refurbished caves complete with jail cells (where the guards, lower vampires and children of very weak groupies, are kept) and a court, it’s paradise to most vampires mainly because it’s fairly dark and there is always blood from the groupies or servants not to mention twenty four hour orgies.
Basically there are vampires in Sorin’s world, there are the masters (the original vampires, born of a mega vamp called the Dragon who is currently snoozing somewhere under the guard of a unknown Master) who are old vamps and spend most of the time fighting or hiding from each other, most have separate undergrounds although they can merge together to form super undergrounds.
There are also those that the masters chose to sire: who can either be like Sorin (basically independent of his sire if he wishes to be, though he’s clingy) or vampires who are called the Elites in the Hollywood underground (most in the books are Hollywood celebrities but as for the type of vampire… Well, they need to stick close to their sire since they need to drink his blood every month or else they wither and die, it’s dependant relationship), then there are the “children” of such vampires who are only a little less powerful then their parents but still pretty darn powerful (although nobody has bothered to name them in the Hollywood underground, since there have been only 2 (soon to go up to 3) known there)
So, by the time it gets to their children (the Master’s great grandchildren, technically) the blood from the master has diluted a lot, this creates a group known as “the groupies” who are basically near mindless creatures who can be manipulated by nearly anybody but who are also fiercely loyal to the Underground, these creatures tend to act in a servant capacity and provide sex important services to the Elite.
Finally there come the Guards and the human servants, the human servants are basically just that- humans who have become aware of vampires and who choose to serve them and provide blood though usually not sex, the Guards are a little more complicated being the children of Groupies and created by magic.
Basically the Guards were created by Sorin and are controlled by him through magic, they’re used to protect the Underground and that’s basically their only purpose… They were created from the homeless and others who would not be missed but unlike the other vampires have lost their humanity and look like a cross between a hairless dog and a scorpion, they’re rather creepy but Sorin’s proud of them.
All levels of parent and child vampires have awareness, this varies from actually being able to see out of each others eyes with some effort (Sorin and the Master), to hearing full sentences (the Master and the Elites) right down to a vague feeling (the Groupies and their creators), this awareness can only be severed by distance, even if the parent becomes a human again a faint feeling still remains.
Being a vampire can be cured in two ways, the first way is death (duh) but the second way is a little more complicated, if a parent is killed their child immediately becomes human again: fast forwarding to the age they would’ve been had they not been frozen as a vampire, for a vampire of Sorin’s age this would be fatal since he’d crumple into dust, for younger vampires however they can pretty much go back to being a normal human… Except with a very stained soul (the soul is removed after the person becomes a vampire, it can come back but it leaves a much darker person afterwards.)
Vampires in Sorin’s universe aren’t really that much different from “ordinary” vampires in most ways though, Sorin (and other vampires of his strength, such as Elites (although anybody below that will fry)) can come out in sunlight for about four hours at a time but any longer than that and he’ll slowly burn away unless he covers himself almost completely with coats and other such things, the only main difference is that vampires above groupie have no fear of holy objects (including holy water) and can usually only be killed by silver or fire (and technically the removal of a head, but good luck with getting him to sit down for that), silver to the heart or brain is instantly fatal, silver anywhere else will produce a slow painful death.
So, apart from the many vampires Sorin’s world is a lot like our own, except with more supernatural stuff going down.
