What you mention about Ten is SO FREAKIN' TRUE, I CAN'T EVEN. He actually BECAME A PERSON, and I think that's what RTD does so well, is make his characters seem like REAL people, because of how utterly attuned he is to the human character. Ten isn't going to be everyone's favorite, I get that, we all have different opinions, ~IT MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND~ but hate for him because of he actually HAD emotions? He was fully fleshed out and REAL. Yes, some people just want their tv to be a happy ~escape~ (more power to them) but when it comes to full out character writing, so utterly consistent, and so completely realistic? I will never be convinced that Ten isn't one of the best out there. EVER

RTD had the guts to take the fun and adventure and say, 'Hey, you know what? In all actuality, life is not like this.' Bad things happen to good people. Good people do bad things and traveling with the Doctor...it's an adventure, and it's life-changing, but people get hurt. No one is bulletproof, not even the Doctor.'
Perfect. You said it better than I ever could, bb.
There's this quote that I can't be bothered to find right now, but it talks about how scifi is the perfect mirror on society and human nature. Which is exactly what RTD chose to do with his brand of scifi. He did character studies. Yes, there was the TARDIS and the sonic, but take that away, and you just have people. Very real people. And that is some amazing stuff right there.
Epic quote sounds epic!! I can totally see that about sci-fi. It's a great vehicle to use because everything doesn't have to be so "literal." You can take totally unreal situations in this genre but pull out some of the best commentary on life while still making things fun and interesting. I used to be like, SCI-FI??? WHAT EVEN IS THIS? And now it's like THE BEST GENRE EVER. Oh, how times change. LOL.
Lol Ash, I hardly know what more to say to your comments because they're so wonderful and perfect!
To me, it just seemed so obvious that RTD was always trying to show a message like that with his DW. For example, in the DWC for Doomsday, so many times he mentions that of course he couldn't kill off Rose, of course he couldn't, it's a family show about HOPE.
I LOVE THIS META. NOT AS MUCH AS I LOVE DOCTOR WHO, BUT THAT WOULD BE UNPOSSIBLE.
BASICALLY, EVERYTHING RUSTY TOUCHES TURNS TO GOLD AND UNICORN POOP.
I love how much heart he gave the show. It's always been a show about a "madman in a box", as Eleven (rather wonderfully, imo) put it, but Rusty made it something more. It's about big epic adventures while at the same time being about the tiny, little things that completely ordinary humans do

Awww ty bb. And loving anything more than DW is totally unpossible.
And all the zillions of other characters who are part of the Doctor's life but so, so brilliant and stand alone as real people brilliantly. Like Harriet Jones. WHAT A BAMF.
I KNOW. The woman was in four episodes, yet I feel like I know SO much about her. It's one thing to do series regulars as in-depth as he did, another to allow recurring characters the chance to grow and shine as much as he did.
I really wish RTD would've stayed on for s5. I love Ten as much as the next person, but I accepted regeneration without much of a fuss. But I think RTD could've done Eleven/Rory/Amy with a lot more heart than there currently is. I like flashy plots, but I love characters, and Moffat isn't really delivering.
Me too! I love him! His writing of Eleven in SJA was so different, yet not. It's just the tiny things I can hardly explain that I love about the way he writes for the Doctor.
LOL I can obviously not say the same about being able to accept regeneration. It just took me awhile.
I read somewhere that RTD said he never wrote Nine and Ten differently, he just wrote "the Doctor," which makes it so cool to think about how Eleven would fit in. And it's true--look at the flat dialog from Nine and Ten--it's really very similar. And a lot of times, stuff Eleven says fits perfectly; I really noticed it in A Christmas Carol. COME ON RTD COME BACK PLEASE

Oh totally. I feel like I learned more about Eleven as a person from SJA: Death of the Doctor by RTD than in all of s5.
