I just want to give a big THANK YOU to all who have been commenting on my picspams. It's nice to know that they're being enjoyed, and it gives me an excuse to keep doing them. I also love the fact that you all seem to view the characters (most of all Soames) the same way that I do. I honestly thought that something was wrong with me for feeling absolutely no sympathy towards Irene, and being completely unaffected by the Irene/Bosinney love story. Also, I love that I'm not the only one who totally digs June/Soames. OMG, THEY ARE COMPLETE SOULMATES! WHY ARE THEY NOT TOGETHER? I'm only halfway through series 2 right now, but they really upped the June/Soames vibes, so much so that I am absolutely convinced that they were made for each other. I don't even care anymore that they're cousins. I haven't read the book, so I have no clue if they end up together, but they should (although I doubt that they do) [They don't :'( ] Irene's story mirrored Young Jolyon, and they ended up together, June and Soames are mirrors of each other (in story and personality), therefore they should get to end up together. Why do I bring this up? Because episode 4 is what really escalated my love of June/Soames. I was already feeling it, but the funeral scene in this ep gets my heart racing every time I watch it. They are just so absolutely wonderful together, and I wish that they had more scenes with each other. I'm not sure if the slightly sexual chemistry between them was done on purpose or if it was just the actors, but either way, I love it. For some reason, when Soames interacts with June, he really treats her like an equal, and I can't think of anyone else that he does that with. Even after she tears him down (which she pretty much does every time they talk with each other), instead of getting steaming angry like he does with everyone else, he actually listens to what she says, and she manages to make him reevaluate himself, and she basically opens his eyes to reality. Is she a bit harsh during the funeral scene? Well... yeah, but for some reason I don't blame her. She made him acknowledge his own faults, which is something that he needed to do. Now, I mostly blame Irene for everything, but poor Soames made some very bad moves, and he needed to realize that. There were faults on both sides. Anyway, on with the show! I warn you that there will be a whole lot of focus on June/Soames, because I'm crazy. Oh, if you need a refresher:
Ep1,
Ep 2,
Ep 3.
So, we left off with Irene coming back to Soames because she had nowhere else to go...
And she's completely miserable...
So she leaves... again.
Soames is all hopeful and excited about having a new beginning, but then Irene doesn't answer to his knock, so he opens the door...
And figures out that she's gone. He doesn't want to believe it, but he knows it's coming...
And when the maid shows him the wedding ring, he knows it's all over. Forever.
Oh, Soames! :'(
Then he gets snippety to the maid for not changing the flowers in Irene's room...
And he tells her to keep tending Irene's room, because he believes in his heart that she'll come back to him, and the audience lets out a frustrated sigh as we all realize that he still cannot let Irene go.
Yeah, that's what my face looked like too.
June and her father meet each other after having not seen one another since she was just a little girl.
And she hears that Irene has left Soames and completely disappeared. (and she totally wants her some Soames, trust me. Irene may not see how gorgeous Soames is, but June isn't so stupid. Honestly! Okay, so maybe this bit is only in my head)
Bosinney's funeral, organized by June, because she's awesome and has a good heart, and she knew that no one else *coughIrene* would care enough to organize it all.
Soames looms in the background, hoping to see Irene. (and he's totally checking out June)
And she notices, because whenever he's around, she seems to know exactly where he is and what he's doing. (and she's squeeing on the inside because he was checking her out)
And she rushes after him and actually seeks out a confrontation with him (because she cannot resist his sexy animal magnetism).
And he just looks at her in that frustratedly amused way that he always does and tells her to go back to her guests...
And she says, "Shall I introduce you? Mr. and Mrs. Banes, meet the man who killed your nephew." And he just rolls his eyes and walks away.
And she goes after him again, saying that he didn't deny it, and he says that he wouldn't demean himself (and the sparks are flying like mad and I'm shouting, "Just make out already! You know you want to.")
She asks if he's not there for God's forgiveness, then why did he come? (to make out with June, duh)
And then June lets him know that she knows the real reason, saying, "You didn't think that she'd really be here?" (but we all know the real reason he's there is to have a sexy confrontation with June, forget poopy Irene)
And they are SO intensely involved in their confrontation that they've completely forgotten that anyone else was there, and are kind of startled when Jolyon interrupts them, but they both act like they're having a pleasant conversation (and June is really going, "Daaaaaad! Go away! I'm trying to make out with sexy Soames!")
June: Don't you think that Irenie knows how your mind works? I do and I've never had the misfortune of living with you. (Translation: I know you better than anyone because we are soul mates and should have many, many babies together)
Soames: The belief is mutual, June. (Translation: Yes, I agree. Let's get it on.)
June: Sometimes I wonder if there's blood running through your veins. (why don't you have the same passion for me that you have for Irene, damn it?!)
Soames: Better a little composure than a show of feigned emotions, the dutiful fiancee in mourning act (I'm jealous because you're still in love with Bosinney)
June: There's nothing dutiful about my feelings for Phil! (I can't help it if I loved him! I was young and stupid, so sue me)
Soames: No, and there's nothing honest about them either. If Bosinney is dead it's because he was off with Irenie when he should have been with you. Why was that June? Ah, not so full of theories now. (I would never cheat on you... although, it is Irenie, and I'm still pathetically hung up on her, so...)
June: I wasn't enough. (But I'm enough woman for you, Soamesy Boy)
Soames: At last, a little truth. (no translation needed here)
June: And there's the difference between you and I! You could never admit that in a million years!
Soames: Because it's not so!
June: No, you're right. You were too much. Too possessive, too domineering, too insensitive! (but not for me!!!)
Soames: Oh, you know me so well. (wow, you really do know me better than anyone, come on then, let's have a snog)
June: Too stupid, too desperate! And at the end of it what have you learned? You still think that she's the one to blame!
Soames: I gave her EVERYTHING!
June: And understand NOTHING!!!
June: Even now after all that's happened! Any joy she felt, you crushed. Any hopes, you soured. Did you never wonder why you didn't have children?
June: You thought she was barren? You see, her fault again.
June: No, she wasn't barren, she just couldn't bear to have a child of yours squirming inside of her.
June: She made sure of it.
June: There go the shutters! Accept it, Soames, she's never coming back!
June: She'd rather sell her body to a thousand men than suffer another kiss from you!
Soames: You know nothing about her! Your friendship with her was a sham!
June: Yes. She stole the love of my life, my future. I should hate her, but the alternative was you. I cannot hate her.
June: I can only wonder how she didn't do it sooner.
OMG, I LOVE THAT CONFRONTATION!!! So full of angry passion and truth. I think what threw Soames off so much was how willing June was to admit her own faults, and her ability to see in him everything that he tries so hard to deny (and things that most people probably never notice about him). And the fact that she had been hurt just as deeply as him but still took Irene's side really seemed to have killed him. And June wasn't being vindictive or trying to hurt him, she was actually helping him in some weird way. She was angry at him for Bosinney's death, and she was lashing out at him because of that, but it was still such a moment of honesty for them, and she seems to so desperately want him to just let go of Irene. Gah, I love it! And I love that this moment is what actually makes Soames hit rock bottom and start the process of mourning his relationship with Irene.
Lying in bed all depressed and has given up on the world, same way that June was when Bosinney dumped her and she accepted the end of their relationship.
A little bit of a smile as he talks to Freddie and she lets him know how much Val and Imogen love him...
But then he breaks into heart-wrenching tears and I just want to gather him up in my arms and never let anything else in the world bother him ever again. :'(
Refusing to eat and very childishly telling his mother that he's not a baby.
Soames: Whaaat?
Mother: I've seen that look before. Remember that cat (or maybe it was a dog, can't remember) that you used to dress up in doll's clothes and take with you everywhere?
Soames: Yes, I loved it.
Mother: I know you did. You loved it so much that you smothered it to death. I should have whipped you and taught you not to love with your whole heart.
Huh? Not what I was expecting.
Mother: You feel things too much, you always have. It's my fault.
Soames: ...
Hmm...
Soamesy is back to his immaculate self the next morning...
And his mother is happy. (by the way, Soames' mother and father and Freddie are the only ones who don't side with Irene, and I love them for that. Soames is their rock, and they adore him, and nothing will ever change that. Even when Freddie is steaming mad at Soames, she still loves him to bits).
Soames tells the maid that Irene won't be coming back, so she can stop changing the linens and whatnot in her room, and I always let out a big "WHOOP!" when he does this. He's getting on with his life, and he now knows that his world still exists even if Irene's not in it. Is he over her? No. I don't think he'll ever be over her.
Old Jolyon buys the house on Robin Hill.
Soames says goodbye to all of his hopes and dreams for the future...
And he gets on with his life. He keeps going, because he has to. But his spirit? His passion? His emotion? Irene took all of that with her. :'(
The Jolyon Forsyte family moves into Robin Hill, and June feels closer to Bosinney.
Five years later...
Helene dies. :'( June and Young Jolyon go on holiday together to try and get over the loss and bond, no idea where Jolly is, school, I guess, so that leaves Holly and Old Jolyon all alone. And what happens?
Stupid Irene comes back.
And works her way into Old Jolyon's heart with her whole, "I'm a completely innocent saintly angel who was terribly wounded by the devil named Soames" act. Oh puh-lease! I can't believe that Old Jolyon was sucked in by that. In fact, everyone is sucked in by her beauty, which makes them want to believe that she's saintly, which is the ONLY reason why she gets away with it. Ick. (sorry, I just can't stand Irene. She really wasn't worth Soames' all encompassing love). Anyway...
Freddie spots them at the opera together...
And she gets ready to tell Soames...
But he already knows, because he seems to have a sixth sense that lets him know when she's near, and... he heard people talking.
Freddie wants to talk about it, but he doesn't. And no, he hasn't contacted Irene (but he most definitely wants to and it's taking an extreme amount of willpower for him not to).
And his willpower crumbles as he goes to the opera to try and nonchalantly "bump into" Irene and Jolyon (but they never show up). Oh, Soames. WHY DO YOU LET HER TORMENT YOU LIKE THIS??? FORGET ABOUT HER! PLEASE!
Old Jolyon basically proclaims his love for Irene, and she accepts it because she's still being all, "Oh, I'm a saintly angel, everyone must love me, everyone except that awful Soames."
And then he dies, after having left 15,000 pounds to Irene in his will.
Soames looking sexy at the funeral.
He goes to give his condolences to Young Jolyon, but really, it was just an excuse to have another sexy exchange with June.
See? Frustratedly amused again.
Soames: Seems we only ever meet at funerals. (translation: hey there. How come you never visit me? You know you want me.)
June: Mercifully. (Indeed. But I'm going to be teasingly cold to you and play hard to get. But yes, I totally want you. Doh! I'm supposed to be playing hard to get.)
Soames: Grrrr, why do I even try? *sigh*
And June watches him walk away, still desperately wanting him, but satisfied with herself for teasing him. OMG, I LOVE THESE TWO! I especially love the fact that Soames ALWAYS tries to have a civil conversation with her and she ends up insulting him (and is just about always amused with his reaction to her insults. She does it to annoy him more than anything else). Oh, just wait till I get to the picspams for series 2, where their interaction is filled with even more tension. GAH!!!)
Soames looking eerie in the background as his family talks about Irene and Old Jolyon possibly having gotten it on.
June talks about how ironic it is that how everyone she loves ends up gravitating towards Irene in the end and loves her more. (which is why it would be perfect for June to end up with Soames, because there's someone who loved Irene first, but then gravitated towards June. COME ON! SO PERFECT!!!)
Young Jolyon is suspisciously quiet, but he then assures her that her grandfather loved June more than anyone.
And then Jolyon goes to tell Irene about the money that his father left her, and he just happens to break down into tears, and naturally Irene is all, "I'm a saintly angel, I'll console you." And we all know how she loves men who are of the emo variety, and we all know how easily Jolyon can move his affections from one woman to another...
UH-OH! I think we all know where this is headed. And since I can't bear to end a picspam with Irene, I'll leave you with this:
*dreamy sigh*
Overall, a pretty good ep, but not enough Soames for my tastes. I loved the depth of his heartbreak, and I loved the June/Soames undertones, and I loved that we were left with Soames being not quite over Irene, because as much as I love him, and as much as I want him to be loved, I have to admit, I love tortured Soames, and the more he makes me cringe, the more he makes me fall in love with him, and eps 5 and 6 have SO MANY cringe-worthy moments that I was basically in heaven for those. Hopefully I'll get those eps capped and summarized fairly soon. I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!
