Pointless College Stories: Out on a Limb IV

Will it never end?

A True College Experience

On one of the quieter weekends, one of my dorm-bound friends stops by the room and asks if I wanted to put a team together with him for a scavenger hunt going on that evening. I agreed even though we didn't have a car between us and no prospects for likely members. I liked this guy ever since he popped into our group and thought that anything he was scheming would be worth the effort. We set out and found a couple of other people to be part of our team, one of which had access to a van.

When we got to the rally point, we had to come up with a name. Since our team consisted of three guys and one girl, we latched onto the Hitchhiker's Guide theme pretty quickly. For the night, I became Ford Prefect along with our driver, Arthur (His real name was Ed). Trillian was actually the Wendy who gave me my prized name tag. And Zaphod, well, most of you all know Zaphod already. Ever wonder where his nickname originated? Now you know.

Our team didn't set our sights on actually competing against the others. We seemed more focused on having a good time tooling around seeing what items we could dig up. One of the items was a pet of some sort so we popped by Arthur's parents to abscond with the family dog, whom we dubbed Marvin since he seemed terribly nervous riding in the van.

We had the best time that night and though we didn't make much of a showing compared to the other teams, I still look fondly on that night from time to time. And though I shed my nickname after that evening, I found Zaph's suited him to such a degree that it became the only way I would address him, or introduce him for that matter.
