I traveled a lot as a kid. The natural history museum in Vienna was like a much dustier version of this, with everything floating in formaldehyde. I used to summer there at my Omi's and loved to go looking at the creatures.
My parents also managed a former great camp in the Adirondacks, a relic from the great white hunter days of the world. Animal bits everywhere: elephant feet umbrella stands, antler chairs and the like.
It was a while before I realized that not everyone had bearskin rugs in front of the fireplace. And that most people REALLY don't have polar bear ones.
