In preparation for my first lesson this week, I have been doing some conditioning drills on the bass. These were related to me by the guy who sold me the bass and since he plays himself, I figured they would be worth a shot ( Read more... )

Part of the problem with the fat-finger-syndrome is that you don't have good calluses yet; this means the pad of your finger sort of squishes and covers more of the string than it should. This is something that passes in time - the harder callused skin spreads out less, and gives you a much smaller contact area on the string.

If you're really eager to get to that point, you can buy grip exercisers with roughened caps to help build the calluses. I needed to use them for my little finger, to get it caught up with the other three.

Are there exercisers out there other than those things that look kind of like a giant jackknife with springs?

I use the Gripmaster with the roughened caps. I'm a wuss, so I use the light model.
