Lights! Camera! Action!

Riding the wave of game releases to take full advantage of the Christmas season comes the second of two quick releases from Lionhead Studios titled The Movies. The geeks will recognize that Lionhead was formed by designer Peter Molyneux, whose litany of innovative games always perks up my ears whenever I bump into his name.

I'm interested to hear what you think of it as you go deeper, Fish. I've been intrigued by the game for some time, as I am a fan of Tycoon-type games. Mr. Molyneux's reputation also carries some weight with me, although I got burned by Black & White, so he doesn't inspire the Pavlovian reaction that Sid Meier or Will Wright does.

And Sid is probably the primary reason I don't have The Movies already. It's a darned shame that it had to come out right on top of Civ 4, because I suspect their target markets overlap substantially. So with Civ in hand, I'm content to put The Movies on my Christmas list and see what friends and reviewers think of it.

By the way, if you haven't, you should check out Fargo's article on Gamespy for the story of how he inadvertantly invented the gay cowboy genre.

I've always been a little more forgiving of Molyneux's games because I have a deep respect for how they are trying to push the boundaries of the gaming experience. Trust me, it's been hard to fend off the temptation of team Sid even though I have this new toy to play with. If I'm even half right about this game, my journal will probably have regular posts of my exploits into virtual film.

In fact, I just hashed out a concept for a serial Sci-fi thing.
