Fencing 101

Nov 15, 2005 18:19

From the comments in my last post, I've decided to go back and do a bit of a refresher on some of the basics of the sport as well as how many of the tournaments are run. I am not overly sure how best to organize it here, so this post may change over time.

I love that the coin toss comes before the overtime minute. 'Tis such a simple thing, yet it has such a profound psychological effect.

Have you ever seen Madonna at one of your tourneys?

The seems particularly brutal.

One guy knows all he needs to do is defend, and the other guy knows he's got to win.

Precisely. I contains overtime to one round and encourages action out of both fencers. I find that the one who wins the toss fairs better when he attacks rather than trying to fend off his opponent.

Haven't bumped into the voguing Kabbalist at any of my tournaments. I guess we just don't express ourselves well enough to deserve attention from that girl, whoever she is.
