Life's simple pleasures

I'm not one for memes. But considering my recent hiatus from posting and the intriguing nature of this one, I'll bite for a change.

Name ten of life's simple pleasures that you like most, then pick ten people to do the same. Try to be original and creative and not to use things that someone else has already used.

Be it a hit that stops an advancing opponent in his tracks, a nonchalant dig under their guard or a forceful opposition that puts their blade completely out of harm's way while scoring a touch, I derive a great deal of joy in anticipating and ultimately controlling the actions of my opponent. The mixture of subtle grace and calculated savagery makes for a highly exhilerating form of dance. Like the tango, but with weapons.

Art is an emotional representation of the world, coalesced by the medium and the perceptions of the artist. Though I've dabbled in several areas, food is a medium where my creativity seems to flourish. Giving form to inspiration, bolding exploring unfamiliar territory or experimenting with tried and true methods, it gives me a great sense of accomplishment when a dish comes together the way I think it should. The only thing that can top that creative catharsis is enjoying the results with other people.

As my old computer science teacher once said, "Computers are stupid." However, they are very good at doing exactly what you tell them. If you can speak their language, that can be just about anything you can imagine. The fringe benefit is that you only have to get it to work once.... and after that, it will do it every time. It is the closest I think I can get to deification before the men with the butterfly nets come for me.

For those who know me, it is not too much of a shocker that I enjoy a good pun... or, indeed, a bad one. I have a high appreciation for language for its versatility in expressing ideas. This is because words have meanings in of themselves as well as in context to one another, much like paints on a palette. An odd turn of phrase or a new play on words is akin to mixing those colors in an altogether different manner. And while that shade may be hideous, its invention elicits novelty and glamor to me. It is like a private epiphany where, for one brief moment, anything is possible.

It is that deep, deep blue sky you get on a clear day. Any time I look into it, it is as if it the hue drives itself into the center of my squishy bits and spreads me throughout the infinite beyond. So insignificant and vast at the same time... pretty trippy for a wavelength of the visible spectrum.

Whatever the game, whomever the opponents or partners, cards remain to me a gleeful exercise in submitting to the forces of Chaos. Sure there is strategy and skill one can employ to affect the outcome of play, but ultimately you are still at the mercy of the cards themselves. When I finally accepted that fact, I found myself able to revel in the odds and become a much shrewder player as a result.

Much like captain_squid has stated, the feel of the wind in the sails and the feel of the hull cutting through the water as a result of it make for a most profound experience. I get a great sense of unity with nature because it involves working in harmony with those forces instead of subjugating them. Do not get me wrong, I am all for progressive technology, but it is nice to feel like I am part of the world instead of making it a part of me.

Since my friends have described some of the pleasant aspects of other potent potables, I'll proffer some love on whiskey and scotch. Like many liquors it can be an aquired taste. It is distilled beer after all. Once aquired though, it explodes into a world of vivid aroma and flavor. It is hard for me to pick a favorite because it would unjustifably devalue so many others crafted with equal care and skill.

More of a guilty pleasure than anything, or geeky pleasure considering the circumstance. However, I do still feel a certain amount of satisfaction when I score and incredible on a duty puzzle, or top the list of those on the ship. Somehow it just feels like I am carrying my weight and helping the rest of my mates succeed.

I am not handy. I am not a craftsman. I am two good hands, a strong back and teachable. This makes me an ideal resource for helping others with their projects. And I am glad to do it. Doing it for yourself is good. It shows resourcefulness and independence. Doing it for other people is better because two heads are usually better than one and an extra hand will usually make any job get done appreciably faster. That and such help usually entails reciprocation and I can get behind that considering my depth of knowledge at home improvement.

I will refrain from tagging people for this meme. This seems like an exercise you would want to do if you are due for some introspection.
