So, last week while recovering from my stress attack, I watched a bunch of old animated movies. Among these was a copy of The Thief & The Cobbler that I found on VHS at my local nifty rental place.

Holy shit. I'd always heard it was bad, but I still wasn't prepared for it. This is by far the worst hack-and-slash job I've ever seen on a movie. ( Read more... )

...I'm speechless. This thing actually looks pretty freaking good! If anyone can save it, John Lasseter can!

I first heard the rumor when I was a student, but apparently it's still fresh and current, so there's hope!

See, I feel guilty.
I guess if the first time I'd seen it was after I'd been a legitimate animation nerd and/or heard the horrible story behind it, I would've been appalled, but as it is I saw the movie ages and ages ago, when I was a wee one, and I loved it. I even liked the songs. Well, um...one song. I have no excuse.

Although the bits that always impressed me the most were the hallway chase and the scene where the One-Eyes start moving their war machine--good old fashioned nightmare fuel. I think those were original; I know YouTube used to have what there was of the original available, but it wouldn't surprise me if it got taken down.

Even with the hack-job, I still think it's a fab movie. It's got Vincent Price in it, and honestly, that's usually all that's required to make me watch a movie.
